Scowling, he reaches up to brush his fingers over his face, checking if anything is on it. At first, there’s nothing there, and this only serves to make him more confused. Until his fingers trail over the jagged, rough edge of the scar that lies on the right side of his face, a scar that should be covered by his magic, and his heart promptly drops straight into his stomach.
He’s reaching for his ears before he fully registers it. Sure enough, there’s no longer just one. Three flick beneath his fingers as he palms the sides of his head.

“Is it bad?” Wukong asks from the other side of the fire, cast in an orange glow. Macaque looks up at him and rolls his eyes.
“Could be worse,” he says. It’s a half truth. It doesn’t feel bad, mostly because the area has already begun to go numb, which might be worse. “Might be poisoned, though. Stupid thing was probably venomous.”
“Shit. Is it…?”
Life-threatening?
Macaque snorts. “Guess we'll have to sit here and find out, huh?”

She’s just there, across their campsite from him, sitting with her feet tucked under her like she’s been there for hours.
