(archival record inspired by the DONIverse AU. this will make little to no sense without the context of that.)

Summary
Alfred turns to look at him now and while Arthur may not see him clearly, he feels the tears slowly dwelling in his eyes. Alfred’s little puddle of tears is enough to get Arthur out of quicksand as he approaches the boy carefully. His heart screams at him to run, but his legs refuse to listen. He sighs and slightly rolls his eyes as Alfred’s cries get louder and louder, immediately stopping himself. The lad’s cries have, in fairness, always been louder than average. Even when Arthur would hold him as a baby, his cries would echo around the meadow. Though he’s not entirely sure whether he’s justifying himself or his boy.
Or: Arthur spends a day with his son. Until he doesn't.

Summary
“Stop talking so loudly, nobody else shall know about this. I merely had an accident is all,” Alfred interrupts louder this time. His face. is numb, he can barely speak, but it is all worth the sacrifice.
It's worth it that he will never have to look in the mirror and find the reflection of his father staring back at him. Well, maybe not quite father.England was— is worlds away from that. From having the privilege of that title.
He has stopped having it when the visits became less frequent, when his voice would get colder each time, and when he stopped tucking Alfred in.
or: Alfred doesn't look like his father. Not really. He doesn't until he looks in the mirror and sees that ugly mark on his face.
