“So what happened?” Harry asked, watching Louis hop around the bench and toward the car.
“I did this crazy dive for the ball before it went into the outfield,” Louis answered. “You should’ve seen it, babe. It was awesome. I did one of those tuck and roll things and when I came up, my ankle just kind of went the wrong way.”
Harry nodded. “That sounds like a great movie scene, Lou. What really happened?”
“That is what really happened!”
Harry raised an eyebrow.
“Fine,” Louis huffed. “I ran to first base and tripped over the bag when I was trying to get Ernie out. Are you happy?”

Louis had over-reacted, as usual, but the last person he was going to admit that to was Harry. Louis had a habit of flipping out about small things and Harry had a habit of flipping out because Louis was flipping out and instead of fixing it the way Louis wanted him to, Harry too often chose to say nothing because he was afraid Louis was going to overreact. Maybe Louis needed to apologize, but first, he needed Harry to apologize to him the right way this time.

The pet name had escaped his lips without warning and it left a sweet taste on Harry's tongue. He didn't take it back and Louis didn't complain. They stayed like that for what felt like an eternity, both sitting against each side of the door, their soft breathings becoming one. When Harry stood up to go to his bedroom, he heard Louis shuffle behind the door. He thought for a moment that Louis was going to open it, but only a soft whisper came.
"How are we going to survive this?"
Harry didn't know what he was implying, whether it was the future of the world when a virus was decimating the population, or the two of them getting stuck together in this quagmire. So he didn't answer. He quite agreed with Louis on one point. What was worse than staying locked in for weeks with your future ex-husband?

“Why bother with a slutty Halloween costume when you’ve been known to act like a whore all year round?” Harry leans in to ask, flashing a fake smile at Louis when he pulls back.
Louis wants to punch him right in each dimple, but he resists the urge to make those craters on his face more fist-shaped. After all, he’d hate to spend Halloween weekend in jail.
“You have a lot to say about my costume, but what is it that you’re supposed to be?" Louis asks mockingly, gesturing down at Harry's outfit. "Elvis? You look ridiculous, but I guess you’re used to that. Wouldn't it have been easier for you to come dressed as a clown? Y'know, since you look like one without trying.”
When Louis and Harry run into each other at a Halloween party two months after their breakup, they’re reminded of how rude, infuriating, and utterly perfect for each other they are.
