But the thing is, Snake's been trained to wait. One of the hardest parts of Miller's regimen weren't the grueling drills that pushed your body to its limit- it was learning to do nothing but stare at a vacant wall for hours and still remain alert. Most rookies cracked within the first few hours. Those who did were sentenced to suffer another eternity in hell.
Compared to that, watching Hal slowly come apart under his hands is a goddamn treat.

Summary
An AU where Snake remained in the government's clutches as the perfect soldier of the Les Enfants Terrible project and is sent to investigate Armstech and their secret development of the bioweapon Foxdie. Hal works at Armstech as an engineer and catches his eye. Believing to find him suspicious, Snake keeps watch over him, only to quickly fall in love with him.
Hal is attacked by mercenaries when he gets too close to the discovery of Foxdie and is rescued by Snake, who he finds out has been stalking him. Together, Snake learns how to accept that he's a person, and Hal learns how to live without a mask.

Something soft but aching panged in his heart as he looked at these little ones, and wondered how many of them were siblings. How many of them shared parents in some way or another. How much did they resemble their parents, he wondered. Would Rocky and Adrian's kids resemble either of them? He hoped so. Adrian's green, Rocky's carapace. Their passion for science, their curiosity and kindness. Their love for each other, and him. He wouldn't get to see them grow up. Eridians lived for so long, and humans… didn't. They wouldn't even be in their teens when he died.

That is a lot of words, and Grace is pointedly half-asleep. They trickle over him in lazy streams of thought as he sips his coffee, through his early, “it-is-maybe-morning” fog…
—And then he nearly chokes on his coffee, cheeks flushed bright, bright red.
“Are you calling me your pet?”

Summary
Rocky had fallen in love with Grace long ago. There were many reasons, even now, not to act on this love. Telling Grace would likely make it uncomfortable and add stress to its already very stressful short life. Their journey to Erid would last under four Earth years, which is practically nothing in the grand scheme of things. Rocky would soon be reunited with all his friends and family, and of course, his lovely bond mate.
All this to say, it would be an unspeakably stupid, selfish, illogical decision to approach Grace romantically. A decision Rocky knows he would regret for the remaining 300 years of his life. He knows he will regret it, and so he makes peace with keeping it to himself. He loves being Grace’s dearest friend. That’s plenty enough to quiet the voices in his head.
One day, while watching Grace sleep, he learns that Grace reciprocates his feelings.

My face heats instantly and I feel the flush travel down my neck and chest. I shake my head. “No, Rock, I’m not—I’m not spreading my cheeks for you just so you can stare at my, stare at my—” I cut myself off and move to turn back around.
“Grace.” Rocky’s voice has lowered to the near threshold of my capacity to discern it. I feel the word more than I can hear it, the vibrations rocking through me and making me gasp with its intensity. “Show.”
or, alternatively: rocky and grace finally get down and freaky with it-- wherein grace shows hole and rocky has a revelation.
