Is Sparrow fucking kidding him? Grant squints his eyes. He could fucking punch Sparrow right now. Legitimately take him down. If he wasn’t strapped with an IV and a nasal cannula and a scratchy hospital blanket he would absolutely smother his friend. His mouth and heart do something stupid. He chuckles. It doesn’t feel real. It’s something broken and miserable and completely disbelieving.
He shuts his eyes and feels another round of tears, but they’re not as bad as the ones before. These are confused and out of his body. He tried to kill himself and Sparrow is making puns. It’s so jarring that he’s ripped out of space and time. He’s in a hospital bed and he’s alive and Sparrow is making fucking stupid puns.

When Normal leaves, it's quiet. They stand around his car, hugging for long, long moments. Lincoln promises to stay in touch, promises that Normal will be the first to know about everything, every event back at home that changes their lives, for the worse or for the better. Scary kisses him on the cheek, and buries her head against his shoulder for a long moment before giving him a long, bittersweet smile. Taylor hands him a small box, whispering that "You'll need something to protect yourself." It escapes nobodies attention that the small red tail that's grown in over the past few years is tucked between his legs. Hermie doesn't say much, just apologizes that he can't come with Normal, and then, mirroring Scary, kisses him on his other cheek.
His beat-up Nissan pulls out of the Oak-Swallows-Garcia households driveway, down the road, and then he's gone. He doesn't come home for six years.

Oh, yeah. The group text. He can usually deal with things on his own, but the insomnia had really gotten to him. Now, he can barely remember what he'd said, but it had apparently been concerning enough that his old friends had texted back and demanded they drive over.
But that seemed like too much to ask, so he got in his car and drove over to their place instead.
