“You said this was about ‘mundane legal matters’?” Grace prompts.
“Yes.” The Attorney confirms, digging through his leather briefcase. “It took some time for things to get settled what with the wedding and the subsequent funerals and all, but the estate is finally ready for you to take the reins.”
“The estate? What estate? I abdicated the high seat.”
“Yes, well… like I said, these are entirely mundane legal proceedings. This has nothing to do with Mr. Le Bail or the High Council.” He hands Grace a packet of paper, waiting for her to scan over it before continuing. “Even in the absence of Mr. Le Bail’s favor, the Danforth family fortune is considerably immense, especially for a woman of your…” The Attorney trails off, eyeing Grace and Faith’s depressing poor people apartment. “Economic circumstances.”
“Wait,” Grace sputters, flipping through the paperwork. “I don’t get it. Why would I inherent the Danforth family fortune?”
“Well, you are the last remaining Danforth.” The attorney explains simply. As though it’s so simple.

Too soon, however, all but two players were wiped out—Tech and one other.
The other player, ‘Lyber8tress,’ fell back beside Tech. A Cleric, a tricky class to play solo, he gleaned that they were not a first-time player by how quickly they adapted to pocketing him, healing and buffing him as he took on the boss one-on-one. With their support, he was able to bring it down, and he helped himself to the minor amount of gold the encounter rewarded.
He also made sure to send a quick-key emote: Thanks for the healing! appeared over his character’s head, waving one arm.
To his surprise, a flag appeared on his HUD-customization symbol in the bottom corner of the screen. He toggled it open, and saw that he had a message waiting for him. Tech interacted with people so rarely in this game that he did not even set the messenger window into his screen.
He re-enabled chat viewer on his HUD and opened the message.
Tech makes an online friend--but meeting her IRL comes with its own set of problems, least of which being that they could end up more than just friends.

Hunter took in and released a breath. “The lawyer’s name is Obi-Wan Kenobi.” He passed Tech the business card. “He’s an old friend of Cody’s. He said he’d help us…” Another breath, in and out. “I called CPS and reported the abuse. He thinks… he said that he’s confident that we could get custody of Omega.”
The silence that followed his declaration was hollow, each man around the table taking a moment to let it sink in. Wrecker slumped backwards, good eye glazed with relief. Tech nodded, his tablet propped in front of him, legal documents and forums pinned and filed. Echo, catching Hunter’s eye, gave him an approving nod.
Crosshair laughed. “Right,” he scoffed, turning to rinse out his coffee cup. “Perfect.” He dried his hands on the kitchen towel, balled it up, and slammed it into the sink. “Great call, Hunter.”
For over ten years, Hunter and his brothers thought they were done with their mother, Nala Se, her abuse far behind them. When they learned that they have a little sister, still in their mother's care, they decided to do something about it.

Summary
“Omega?” he called out, “Is that you?”
A moment of silence.
“Yeah,” she called back. “I’m home.”
Frowning, Tech put his e-reader down and got off of the couch. These past two weeks, she’d come home breathless with enthusiasm for her new school, chattering through all the things she’d learned and done and seen even until Tech got off of work and returned. This entrance was muted, tired. Completely out of character.
Tech tries to comfort Omega after a bad day at school.
