Nicholas’s morning coffee and cigarette had always been pretty boring, so he never really bothered wearing his glasses out to smoke because there not much to look at from his crappy balcony. Now, he’s glad he did. Staring back at him from the balcony next door is one of the most gorgeous guys Nico has ever seen. He’s tall and blonde, blue eyes and a cute pink blush partially hidden behind dorky, orange glasses. He's holding a huge potted plant in his arms. Behind the plant he’s holding like a baby for some reason, he’s wearing a form fitting turtleneck that shows off broad shoulders and a narrow waist that Nicholas has to tear his eyes away from.
He's so fucked.

Or, Wolfwood forgets that he's just supposed to be some scruffy asshole Vash, Meryl, and Roberto scraped off the side of the road and accidentally lets slip that he can be nice sometimes.
TLDR: Wolfwood and the mortifying ordeal of being appreciated.

It’s not that I wasn’t curious, and it’s not like there wasn’t a more logical part of me that knew that this was terrible security procedure, even if I didn’t hear a peep from risk assessment (what else is new?). But on a deeper level, I knew there wasn’t any risk.
I wanted ART to prove it to me.
I wanted to go in blind and know that it wouldn’t hurt me, and that it would stop if I asked it to. I wanted to let ART in and not have to think about it.

Nearly a year after the end, Nicholas D. Wolfwood returns to the living by mysterious means. He finds that things are very different from how he left them - including one Vash the Stampede. Vash spent the past few months untethered and unmoored, no longer sure of his purpose in a world that still hunts him as if for sport. When he hears news of Wolfwood's miraculous resurrection, he only barely convinces himself not to run as fast as he can in the other direction.
But there is no rest for the living. Questions remain unanswered and words linger unsaid in the year-wide, grave-deep distance between them as they hit the road to figure out how any of this is possible.

Wolfwood looks different. Different than even the hundreds of ghosts—threads of shimmering grey shot through his temples and fine lines splintered out around his eyes like someone dragged a feather through damp clay. Like he’s aged almost decade in the year since he—
“Died,” Vash rasps. “You died.”
Wolfwood’s eyebrows shoot up in an expression that Vash has remembered so many times that his own faulty memory rewrote over the real thing.
“This isn’t—how?” he asks, voice warping around the cold static clogging his mouth.
“You ever hear of Jesus Christ?” Wolfwood grins, and it’s exactly the same. Like no time has passed. Like he’s so proud of his stupid joke. Like Vash didn’t lay his still-warm corpse in the ground and bury him on the other side of that building.
Like the inexorable inspiral of a binary star, Vash is drawn back to the orphanage in December and the unexpectedly empty grave of his dearest friend.
Or, Vash and Wolfwood and all their tomorrows.
