They’re dozing against a rock when the wisp comes to them.
It’s a small thing. Barely more than a flicker of light, bursting briefly against their closed eyelids, near-indistinguishable from the rest of the Fade’s sparks and flashes. It chimes faintly, almost as if offended, when it bumps against Rook’s boot.
And, true, a small thing it may be, but the fact that it is at all grabs Rook’s attention.
Or: When all other evils are set loose from the box, one thing remains. Rook makes a friend in a prison meant to hold gods.

The first-night vigil is a Nevarran tradition, and a very, very old one. When people die, the soul can cling stubbornly to the body. So someone needs to sit with them on that first night - the first of many, many long nights ahead - and make sure the crossing-over is gentle and quiet.
