There was one of those automated clap-tracks on the television as another contestant got the question correct. Gallagher’s eyes were dark as the blue lights of the television screen threw weird shadows onto his face. Mickey wished, almost idly, that there was more lighting in the Milkovich household, if just so that Gallagher didn’t look so ominous. He picked up the remote and muted the TV.
A canon-divergent story from 1x09, in which Tony Markovich suspected foul play and coerced an unwilling Mickey Milkovich into revealing the truth about Kash Karib.

Summary
A twenty two year old Ian has taken on an AmeriCorps position in an elementary school in the Southside of Chicago. It is down the street from his half-siblings’ home so it is the perfect opportunity to give back while reconnecting with the family he never got the chance to know. His father Clayton and adoptive mother Lucy are nervous about their son leaving Boston to return to the rough neighborhood they saved him from but he’s hopeful that he can make a difference and learn more about his past.
Being in charge of 25 seven year olds from the Southside proves to be challenging, especially with a wild pint-sized blond haired and blue eyed rebel challenging his every move from day one. A parent-teacher conference with his most difficult student’s father sets off a string of events that teaches Ian about himself, the siblings he left behind, and a certain rough around the edges thug that he realizes he judged too quickly.

Mickey’s tone is defeated, and his shoulders barely hold their shape. He’s tired. Exhausted, really. Ian can see that in every line of his body, every curve of his face.
There’s so much that Ian wants to say to him, so much he wants to scream across this phone line connecting them, but he can’t. His head is a mess, in more ways than one, and no matter how fast he tries to parse through his tidal wave of emotions, he can’t figure them out.

Summary
It’s been 8 years, and to say those have been challenging for both Ian and Mickey is a gross understatement. Ian stayed true to his word, though. He’s worked on getting his life together, he’s been on a steady medication regimen, and he’s been seeing both a psychiatrist and a therapist. He also hasn’t had any romantic entanglements beyond sporadic one-night hookups since the last day he saw Mickey in prison. He knew his promise to wait that day had sounded lukewarm at best, but Mickey knew how he felt, right? Even behind the flat affect and lack of emotion in his voice?
When Mickey reappears in the South Side, Ian’s just as in love with him as he’s ever been and can’t wait to pick up where they left off, only this time, it’s going to be better…until he sees the undeniable proof that Mickey has moved on during the years they’ve been separated. Mickey’s done too much work to move past the heartache of how things ended between them when he went to prison. Ian’s done too much work to prove he can take care of himself and be what Mickey needs so they can finally make a relationship work this time. And true love conquers all…right???
