It was different when Neal was just an idea of a person. A photo that looked more like a headshot than a mugshot. A man who sent her flowers, and sometimes even birthday cards; all of them anonymous, none of them sincere. That was easier: that was just a thrill, nothing more. But then he showed up on her doorstep, a tracker strapped to his ankle and a smile pasted on his face, and it mattered, all of a sudden, whether Neal went back to prison or not.
It’s a lot more complicated, now that Elizabeth doesn’t want him to go.
