Dana avoided talking about him in any depth, this told her a lot. Dana kept her heart close to her chest; if they weren’t hearing about him Maggie suspected that there was something her daughter was trying to hide.
The doorbell rang. She heard Bill get up out of his chair and head into the hallway as she saw her husband open the door. A young dark haired man wearing a long black trench coat standing on the other side; he was tall and arrestingly handsome. He was dark, brooding with a lock of hair falling over his hazel eyes. Suddenly Maggie understood the appeal.

Deep down, Mulder knew that if they were entangled even more tightly, he’d eventually become more irritated than aroused by her voice. He’d hear it in reference to uneaten vegetables and unopened mail and unfolded laundry. That holy righteous rage of hers, that unquenchable fire that roared at him to be better and do better and live better, would illuminate not just his career but the entirety of his being. And he doubted he could live up to that scrutiny. After almost almost getting her killed any number of times, somehow Mulder knew that asking her to forgive more mundane betrayals would be the final straw. Abduction? Possession? Cannibalism? All in a day’s work. Leaving sunflower shells everywhere? That was a bridge too far. It was better, safer, sweeter, kinder to love each other the way they did. To keep some mystery alive, and with it her steadfast belief in him. Delaying consummation was delaying his inevitable disappointment of her.

She buried her head in her hands and took a deep breath, then sat up straight. It would be fine. One date, a quick explanation: I’m not looking for a serious relationship; I’m married to my work and I spend most of my time with an obsessive, brilliant hermit who can’t bear to part with me. I may have a brain tumor, if that makes you feel better. Then she’d cut and run, as she always did. What was one more date?
Purely by chance, Philly PD never calls on Ed Jerse and Scully never leaves her badge out on the breakfast table. She makes it out of Philadelphia unscathed, but other nightmares follow her home: a suspected killer in her bed, a mass in her skull, and a partner who can't seem to bridge the gap. Well, at least she's got a new desk.

Within her absence, a ticking clock meant a nearing minute that she could turn up, could be found, could simply show up at his doorstep and wrap her arms around her and finally finish that game of Sorry they started all those years ago.
A ticking clock now means an end. The potential for another nosebleed. The wavering and eventual collapse. The stilling of a heart. Mulder cannot fathom wishing to lose even nine minutes of the time he has left with Dana Scully.

Memories flash. For a moment Connor finds himself back in Faraday’s garage where he stumbles on a bunch of wires. The light of the corner monitor flicks between black and green, off and on. There it is, year 1996. On neon green, right in front of his eyes.
“Anderson.” Mulder snaps his fingers and Connor looks up, his LED turning from bright red to yellow, signalling his already visible discomfort.
“Connor? What is it?” Cooper finds himself asking.
“I…” he breathes for air he doesn’t even require. “I think I’ve travelled through time somehow.”

Mulder suspects Theodore Bell, the proprietor of the shop who seems awfully flirtatious with Scully. Not that flirting with Scully is against the law—although, as far as Mulder is concerned, maybe it should be.
