Twenty seven cracks on the ceiling. What looks like a cobweb in the corner. No spider in sight. Xie Lian remembers, suddenly, his silly childhood habit of looking for spiders and trying to pet them. And then crying when they’d play dead.
He sits up abruptly, grabs his pillow and gathers his blanket in both hands. He’ll just sleep on his couch.
Only, Xie Lian doesn’t make it to the living room. As he’s passing his hallway an odd noise from the staircase makes him pause.
It sounds almost like someone is crying.
Xie Lian’s life is a mess. Hua Cheng’s life is, somehow, even worse. Luckily, sometimes two negatives make an affirmative.

“I heard you got married.” San Lang says, all teasing gone, his voice even. “My congratulations.”
Xie Lian wishes his wedding was less public, but Jun Wu wanted to “do everything right”. If he knew back then how many times he’ll have to fake a smile and accept congratulations he would stand his ground.
San Lang’s congratulations sound more like condolences, for some reason. Xie Lian doesn’t ask, but doesn't bother to smile either.

"Mu Qing!" came Dianxia's sweet-sounding voice. "Where are you?" Hua Cheng's pulse sped up. His entire body was screaming for him to bolt down the stairs, flee as fast as he could. He could not be perceived. He would die if he were to be perceived. The soft steps, naked feet on tiles, came closer. Hua Cheng's ears were filled with rushing, his skin prickled all over. It was like tiny hands had grabbed his windpipe and were yanking it up and down. And then the prince came into view, wrapped in a bathrobe. His hair was out of its royal braid, hanging in loose black strands, stark against the white linen. He had the complexion of someone who had just walked out of a steam room, his cheeks and nose pink.
"Mu Qing, I want-" Dianxia said and turned his head, looking up at Hua Cheng and pausing.
Just like that, all the anxiety and fear drained out of Hua Cheng's body.
He could not recall why he had been so terrified. He felt good. Safe. Dianxia smiled and his cheeks dimpled. His smile was so wide it pushed into his eyes, almost making them squint. Hua Cheng realized nobody had ever looked at him like this.
"I know you!" Dianxia said. "You won't run again, will you?"
