The girl crouches. Stephanie instinctively readies herself to fight again, but the girl just picks something off the ground and stands up. She extends her cupped hands. There's a dead rat in them.
"Okay," Stephanie says weakly. Is there a language in which David Cain sounds like dead rat? "Um, I don't really think that's what we need."
The girl sets the rat down.
Or,
Cassandra is nothing like the vampires Stephanie has killed before. She's impossible to hurt, wickedly fast, and enjoys staring at Stephanie like she's a really knotted ball of yarn that's just begging to be untangled. And Stephanie's trapped in a manor with her. With no way out.

Summary
Most of the low level mers had long evolved past the ability to exist in warmer and brighter waters, but Cass was determined. She’d always been strong; had been raised in the trenches and had fought her way into the midnight zone. Out of everyone, she had the most experience in adjusting to the lack of pressure. Now, she just had to prove that she could keep doing it and do it well enough so the others could learn from her. As the only mer in recent history to make a zone change, she was tasked with helping other mers do the same as human expansion and pollution endangered the upper level mers.
