He can offer protection through his hand, he can stop the ever present reminders from his advisors that he ought to get married himself, and save the headache of a bride clutching at him for power when all Dimitri wants is peace. It may not be love, but it’s better than throwing Marianne to the hungry pack of wolves that called themselves Nobles. And it’s better than suffering them himself.

    She need not know the kind of monster Dimitri truly is.
