From behind him, Tony hears Steve walk out into the expanse. “Tony, is this a--”
“Yeah,” Tony interrupts, the word nothing but a croak. “It’s a damn crop circle, alright.”
“I don’t think God did it,” Peter pipes up, and Tony turns around to see him holding Mo in his arms, marveling as always that the teen’s slight frame is still able to carry his five year-old sister with ease.
Mo unwraps her skinny arms from around her brother’s neck, pulling away just enough to look at him with the kind of wide-eyed curiosity only a small child can possess. “So who was it, Petey?”
Peter gives her a soft, adoring smile. “I think it’s a sign from Mom.”

Summary
When Tony takes Peter in after May's sudden death, he does so with the understanding that he, and by extension Pepper, would be there for the kid in a strictly mentor-esque manner. Nothing more, and nothing less - because who were they to replace what he had lost? Fortunately, they fail. Miserably. And the kid wouldn't have it any other way, regardless of how embarrassing it can be at times.

Five times Pepper and Tony were literally the definition of Mom and Dad, and one time Peter showed the world what an amazing son he was.

Tony knows something is up when the research of ex-Hydra agents gets recycled in an underground Oscorp lab… what he doesn’t expect is the boy in a hospital gown sticking to the ceiling; or, how said boy proceeds to imprint on him like a baby duckling (a poor decision on his part, really). Did he mention he wasn’t intending on bringing home a kid that day?
