Wilbur laughs, and Tommy shakes his head, reaching for his water bottle. “I think that’ll be my tactic for winning in MCC; scaring everybody.”
“You won’t have enough time to practice.”
“Hell yeah, I will,” Wilbur says. Tommy can hear the grin in his voice. “You’ll be too busy on camp to stop me. Laughin’ with the boys, hangin’ with the mates – wait, what do kids do?”
Laughing with the boys, Tommy thinks, bitter. You’ll be in a room on your own, the Principal had said. His grip on his water bottle tightens.
“You’re so old,” Tommy says instead, and prays Wilbur can’t hear how hollow his voice is.
