The gun’s metal is cold and damp against Will’s palm. He grips it tighter, and his eyes scan woodland brush for his brother’s face. It can’t be far now—could be around any corner. The surrounding winterscape sits still and silent, like that petrified forest in Arizona that they’d passed through while hunting a poltergeist—one that had been haunting the area irregularly ever since the 1860s. Back then, it had been taking showgirls left and right. By last month, it had clearly started to prefer couch-surfing stage musicians. The petrified forest had been useful because, in its all-consuming silence, the stray plink of a guitar string in its case was like a beacon of light. But this place… Will doesn’t like this silence.

On the way back, Robin sat scrunched up in a ball with her feet on the car seat, drinking the last few sips of her shake and bobbing her head to the music coming out of Steve’s radio. “Do you think that old lady thought we were dating?” she asked suddenly, “She was looking at us, like, oh to be young and in love. ” She swooned, placing both hands on her heart.
“Probably,” Steve said, tapping his thumb on the steering wheel, “Who doesn’t?”
Max snorted, both in amusement and surprise. “People think that?”

Steve’s father liked to smoke out on the back patio.
That fact didn’t seem relevant at first. When Steve came home after school expecting a lecture and instead found a police car in the driveway and his mother having a breakdown, he hadn’t thought about where Dad likes to smoke in the mornings. He hadn’t thought about how often Dad cuts himself shaving. He had thought about Lisa with the boob job and the motel on the edge of town. He had caught Jonathan in Nancy’s room. He had picked a fight. He had gone to apologize.
Then he learned about monsters that are drawn by blood.
