And then there’s Hopper. It’s not like their paths cross very often. Steve’s at Scoops most days, and as it turns out, the Sheriff doesn’t have a lot of reason to go to the mall.
He does have a lot of reason to drive past the quarry looking for drunk teens. If one of them happens to be Steve sometimes, he might hang around for a few extra minutes. They don’t actually talk about anything important then. They never do. They just… exist together, all of the shared shit between them present and quietly acknowledged.

“Max said you were lonely.” She said he smelled like Steve does and Steve’s sense of smell is not nearly good enough to pick up emotions so even this close the heady smell of Billy is not telling him much except that he smells good. Steve kind of wants to lean in closer and press his nose into the skin of his neck, or anywhere he will allow really.
“She needs to learn to mind her business,” Billy rolls his eyes with a huff “but yes I am.”
