Xie Lian swallowed. “What would you have me say, Your Majesty?”
“That voice,” Hua Cheng breathed. “Too clean. Too soft.” His hand pressed to Xie Lian’s lower back, guiding, firm. “I’ll ruin it.”
The words shouldn’t have affected him. But they did. They sank like claws into the hollow of his chest and twisted.
A single hand under his chin forced his gaze upward. Xie Lian’s breath hitched as crimson eyes locked on him - heavy-lidded, glowing with want.
“You were meant to serve the Heavens, weren’t you?” Hua Cheng murmured. “Anointed, sacred, pure. That’s why they gave you to me. To humiliate you. To let a demon defile their angel.”
Xie Lian didn’t flinch. “I’m here because it was ordered.”
“Is that what helps you sleep at night?”
His thumb brushed Xie Lian’s bottom lip. “You smell too empty. I want to see what’s underneath.”
Xie Lian closed his eyes - but not fast enough to miss the expression on Hua Cheng’s face.
That look of hunger.
It was only a matter of time.

But now, when he was standing in the Leisure House watching Shang Qinghua sleep so soundly, he wasn’t entirely sure that his plan was the best course of action.
