The title references Trofim Lysenko’s famous claim that “genetics is a venal handmaiden of imperialism.” Lysenko, a Soviet agronomist who attempted to apply Marxist-Leninist ideology to biology, actually used much harsher wording—literally, “the sell-out girl of imperialism,” though “the whore of imperialism” better captures the tone.

Ivan turned his head slowly to look at him. “You have a what?”
“A plan.” Alfred nodded too quickly, his voice cracking a little. “There’s a Tires Plus like, two blocks from here. I saw it on Google Maps earlier. If we can get there, and I mean if, we can grab a tire. Steal it if we have to.”
Ivan blinked at him. The world felt tilted.
“You want to what.”
“You’ll distract the lizards, I’ll fix the tire. Simple.”
Ivan stared at him like he was speaking in tongues. His mouth opened, no sound came out. Then, finally: “That’s not a plan. That’s a death wish.”
“They’re kind of the same thing right now,” Alfred said, eyes still darting toward the edge of the lot. “But unless you have a better idea—?”

When they speak his name, they speak in equal parts distrust and admiration. Loki: god of chaos, advisor to the All-Father, traitor to the Jötnar.
But when he finds himself in the impossible position of having the chance to fix things, he's not sure if he's worthy of the chance. If he even has what it takes.
He knows one thing for sure, though: he's not letting his father die this time around.
