“You don’t have to do that,” Eddie says.
Buck shrugs. “You also don’t have to smile at every person who says ‘she’s in a better place’ like that helps, but here we are.”
The joke is soft, an opening. Eddie almost steps into it. “You’ve already done a lot,” Eddie says instead, faster than he means. “Go sit. Or eat. It’s—”
He hears it lining up and can’t stop it.
“—this is family stuff. I’ve got it.” The words are wrong the second they’re out; he hears them like Buck must. Buck’s hands still on the plate.
Or, Eddie is taking things day by day. Buck has a bit of a breakdown, then a bit of a breakthrough. Chris sees dead people.

“Maddie thinks you’re in love with me,” Eddie states, and Buck nods once. “Are you?” he repeats—slower now, not as if Buck is stupid—never, not once, has he ever made Buck feel stupid—but as if he’s… encouraging him to… slow down. To process.
“I-I love you,” is all Buck can stutter, along with as much of a shrug as he can manage in this position.
“And I love you,” Eddie confirms—still slow. “But that’s not what I asked you, either.”

They certainly seem familiar with each other now, though without knowing about the kiss she’s not sure she would find their little tangle odd. They’ve always orbited each other, leaned on each other. She’s sure this isn’t the first time she’s seen one of them use the other as a pillow. But maybe… there is something different about the intense but inscrutable way Eddie is staring down at her brother. She think’s she’s touched Howie’s cheek that gently, after a rough day at work. Eddie looks up and they both startle, Maddie unaware of how close she’d drifted and Eddie unaware of anything outside the man in his lap.

Summary
Buck kind of misses it, whatever the doctor is saying. He hasn’t slept in a while. It’s crowded in here, a busy few days in the city. They’re not even the only group of firefighters huddled amongst the uncomfortable chairs and kids with coughs and the old guy Buck really hopes is just asleep and hasn’t died without anybody noticing. There’s another doctor talking to the 136 and he gets lost watching them, the serious curve to the woman’s mouth and the way the team looks like they’ve been doused in paint stripper, something pretty peeled right off of them. So he misses it. What their doctor is saying. He supposes it doesn’t really matter, the specifics. What it means is: Eddie still hasn’t woken up.
