    Summary

    Shadow is a supervillain. He is Ultimate, one of the worst in the city. He deserves the death penalty before he deserves fondness and affection, but he gets exactly that when he indulges the vigilante Phantom, also known as Sonic.

    He also doesn't deserve a family, but after one of the heroes kills Sonic, Shadow finds it impossible to abandon Tails, Sonic's remaining family.

    And he definitely doesn't deserve a second chance to make things right, but the universe seems quite insistent on giving him what he doesn't deserve.

    Jabber whistles appreciatively, "Man, you're in a mood today. Wake up on the wrong side of the bed?" and cackles at his own joke. Zanka's gonna strangle him. He's gonna rip out those bars with his bare hands and use them to beat Jabber to death.

    Zanka is taken by some people who want to study givers. Jabber is there too. This somehow makes everything both better and so much worse.

    Zanka’s breaths are short and wet– he’s not long for this world. Without his mask and with that gaping wound in his chest, anyone can see that he’s not going to survive more than another minute or so. Jabber sits beside him, giddy with anticipation as he waits for Zanka's inevitable death.

    Jabber gets trapped in a time loop where Zanka dies, over and over. It doesn't bother him- he loves the look on Zanka's face as the light fades from his eyes- until he comes to a few realisations about himself, and then it really, really does.
