It would be so much easier if there was something tangible to rage against. If Jaskier’s predicament had been caused by an attack, there would have been such vindictive joy in rendering the perpetrators properly repentant. Or even if his lingering disabilities were the fault of insufficient aid rendered carelessly or too slowly, Geralt could have berated those at fault and in so doing soothed his own soul. But there was no one to blame.
And, as near as he could tell, no way to fix it.

Summary
He wonders briefly how he must seem to the boy. A stern, unsmiling master, so tall that Obi-Wan must tilt his head backwards in order to look up at him. He can see himself through his student’s eyes, stiffly formal and coolly taciturn, and he finds himself wincing away from the image. He has long thought of himself as a dour, uninteresting man. He finds contentment in solitude, sitting quietly in banks of warm sunlight, nursing one cup of tea and then another. Hardly an ideal companion for a child, he thinks guiltily.
All his padawan has known of him is grimness and indifference. He would like to change that. But he does not know how to begin.

He closes his eyes and tries to focus on the stone. It had lived with Qui-Gon for many years, and the feeling of his master returns as Obi-Wan holds it in his hand. He can almost feel him, see him, just as though his master is sitting next to him: Kind eyes that turn distant when he thinks Obi-Wan is not paying attention, the stoop to his shoulders when he kneels to touch the ground. It is only a rock, but when he holds it, he remembers the giving of it. Qui-Gon’s hand brushing against his, the brief smile he had received, and as the holds the memory carefully in his mind, he can almost sense the presence of his master, dusty robes and boots crunching on dried leaves and thumbs tucked in his belt as he pauses to gaze at his surroundings.
Obi-Wan holds on to that faint impression, clinging to it for reassurance.
He will come for me. He will not leave me. He will come.
