Summary
The cost of housing in San Francisco is too damn high. That's why Ethan Kemmotsu, long-time commuter, first time resident, is taking his condo as his demesne.
Still, keeping hold of a place to live isn't easy. Ethan will have to face San Francisco's politics and history in order to claim a position in it as a Practitioner. Despite the city's reputation as a site of modern technological advancement, a deep divide runs between the haves and the have-nots. Who gets to control what land has always been deeply contested within California. Ethan's demesne won't come without a fight.

Nicolette straightened up, taking a deep breath. She’d been rehearsing the statement in her head for weeks now.
“When you Awakened me, you took responsibility for several things. First, that you’d help me control the voices in my head. Second, you’d get me a place to stay that wasn’t my parents’ house. Third, you’d teach me how to fend for myself in this world you were bringing me into. You’ve done the first, and I’m grateful for that. The other two have issues that need to be worked out.”
“I got you invited to the Blue Heron, didn’t I? And I sponsored you into the Belanger Circle,” he said.
“Yes. You did,” she said. “Alexander told me that he was willing to waive costs for the first spring session I spent here, but he can’t let me stay for free forever. He needs someone to cover the cost. Until then, I have to do chores for him to make up the gap.”
“And? Why should I care?”

Summary
In the TV show Arcane, the enforcers are a French-style gendarmerie that combines policing and military action into one single group. Different parts of the city have different reactions to them. In topside, they are seen as heroic, noble law enforcement. By contrast, in the undercity, they are seen as an oppressive occupying force. These relationships are represented by the differing character design choices of what headwear they wear in each region, which references real life military hats.

The rules are still being written every single day. The only way out is to muddle through to the future, whatever it holds, and see what fortunes rise and fall.

Much of this archive focuses on Zachary’s attempts and failures to connect to people, and to discover who he actually is and wants after a lifetime of repression and bigotry.

Summary
The practice is the intersection of self, word, and pattern. Word is inviolate, and patterns have been a part of Naomi Cohen's life for as long as she can remember. Her Self, however, has reached a point of flux, and in that challenge risks collapse.
So obviously the solution is ignore the problem and hope it goes away. Naomi is a student of the past, after all.
And the one thing everyone knows about the past is that it has never, ever had even the slightest bearing on the present.

Really nice AU that humanizes Slytherin but doesn't whitewash their bad qualities. Ginny is made a lot more interesting of a character by putting her in Slytherin this way.
