Summary
It’s difficult being a single father, but Nick does as best he can at raising his little girl, Kim, in a house on his own. With how much he works, he’s often worried about her feeling lonely- but thankfully loneliness doesn’t seem to be much of a problem for her with how many imaginary friends she seems to have. Nick has overheard her reading stories with her teddy bear, giggling and laughing as she entertains herself with a board game, and playing pirate with the ship in a bottle. Most children probably wouldn’t be found trying to strike up a conversation with something like a vacuum, microwave, or the hangers in their closet- but Nick just figures that his daughter is on the more imaginative side. “How did you even get in? I very definitely remember locking up.”
“Ah,” Gale looks ever-so-slightly abashed. Only slightly, though. Mostly he looks a little proud of himself. “You know how the receptionist is always asleep?”
Astarion's eyebrows shoot up.
“Gale Dekarios, you shady thing.”
“I only borrowed it! He's never been awake enough to ask about spares, so. It was easier to just sort it out myself.”
“It would have been easier to ask me,” Astarion points out.
“Mmmm,” Gale hums, doubtfully. “I don't know if I'd ever consider you the ‘easier’ option, Astarion, I feel that would be doing your commitment to cantankerousness a great disservice.”
I'd be extremely easy if you weren't so fucking annoying, Astarion thinks.

Summary
There was silence. Neither of them said anything, they didn’t even move.
Gale regarded him with wide eyes, seemingly taking his features in anew. Then, he scoffed, straightening up to sit on his bedroll. “Of course. I can’t believe I didn’t see it.”
No fucking way. He was not being this arrogant, this insufferable, in this moment. Astarion must’ve misheard him, only he knew he hadn’t.
“You think yourself that smart, Gale?” he asked with narrow eyes, face twisting with distaste.
“Yes, in fact I do.” Gale replied, his tone returning all of Astarion’s hostility. “I am a studied wizard after all. I’ve read all about your kind, assuming you are merely a spawn.”
“Merely.” Astarion repeated. He kept quiet for a while, attempting to discern what Gale was going to do. He discreetly wrapped his hand around the dagger he hid in the hem of his pants, just in case.
The wizard seemed to be lost in thought for a while. Eventually he looked up at Astarion, his eyes twinkling in the moonlight. “Did you plan to kill me?”
“What?” Astarion choked on the word.
