"You’re so beautiful.”
Mel turned his preferred shade of pink, and blinked at him rapidly, adjusting her glasses with her free hand, like she wasn’t sure she was seeing right.
“Frank, you’re concussed.” Mel stated. “You’re confused.”
“And you’re gorgeous,” Frank had found his ice pack. He placed it on his forehead in relief. “Since we’re stating facts.”

Summary
A wide grin covered his face. As he grew closer she could see his dark sunglasses that had blended in with his hair on the top of his head, before her eyes dipped down to his toned chest. His eyebrows raised slightly as he followed her line of sight.
”My eyes are up here, sweetheart.” His voice was so velvety smooth it exacerbated the heat that already began to bloom across her face. She thought that maybe her sunglasses hid what she was looking at, she was obviously wrong. His icy blue eyes felt like a cold drink of water on this summer day. “I’m attending a wedding tomorrow, which I assume you are as well?”
She nodded quickly, with her large sun hat sliding with the motion. It caused a small chuckle to fall out of his lips. “I didn’t think you were coming… I didn’t see your name on the list.”
He quirked his lips to the side, “Were you looking for me?”
Shit.

“Walk me through what you’re thinking.”
Dr. Langdon’s voice came from behind her. Before she had the chance to turn, he stepped closer, leaning over her shoulder to look down at the screen.
It happened so fast. The warmth of him at her back. The clean scent of soap mixed with coffee and something else she couldn’t place. His hand reached around her to point at something on the screen and for half a second, his arm brushing against hers and she became acutely aware of the little space remaining between their bodies.
Her pulse stuttered. Any explanation she had died in her throat, instead only a quiet, choked noise came out. She was effectively frozen, completely against her control.
What the hell?

“I guess I could see if one of my friends is amenable to helping,” Mel continues, and Frank whites out. Sirens in his head, DEFCON 1 or 5 or whichever was the highest, do not pass go. “But that seems like a lot to ask.”
“I, uh, I wouldn’t mind,” Frank hears himself say. “Just, uh, you know, to help. As your friend. But no pressure, I know it might be weird.”
“That’s so nice of you.” Mel sounds genuinely touched, her lips curving up into a soft smile, her eyes glistening up at him, and Frank has never felt like a worse person.

Summary
They were friends.
And yeah, maybe the ring on his finger sort of burned when he looked at her sometimes, even though it was just for show, now.
It was just easier to let her keep thinking he was still married to Abby. Safer.
It raised less eyebrows about the nature of their friendship when the ring stayed on while he was at work, the weight on his finger reminding him not to say or do anything stupid.
It also made it a little less creepy when the pet names started slipping out.

Summary
Some nights were, naturally, worse than others.
Nights where Frank laid in bed for so long, staring at the ceiling, that it made his heart start to race with anxiety and his back ache and ache and ache no matter how he positioned himself. Nights where his thoughts spiraled out into worst-case-scenarios that seemed so vivid and inevitable that he would have to get up and go to the bathroom, just to turn the light on and look at himself in the mirror to remember what was actually real.
Those were the nights when he wanted the pills again the most: alone in his guest bedroom, trying to wring sleep out of his body like the last few drops of water out of a dirty dishcloth.
He tried not to call Mel on nights like that. He did not always succeed.

“Just as a note,” the dentist tells Frank, her voice low. “She may be a little… rambunctious as the sedatives wear off.”
He nods in response, his eyes trained on Mel. She grins at him, unaware that she is the topic of conversation. Rambunctious, he thinks. What could sweet Mel possibly do to be described as rambunctious?

The first bets were placed shortly after the wedding ring disappeared from Langdon’s finger one rainy day in August, never to be seen again. Trinity thinks it’s funny, though she isn’t the most invested, until it all ends up coming to a head in a way more awful than any of them could have predicted.

Summary
If Mel King was anything, she was prepared. Especially working somewhere as unpredictable as The Pit, she needed to be ready in case of any hygiene-related emergency that could occur. She didn’t have enough fingers to count the number of times she had gotten a patient’s bodily fluids on her. It only made sense for her to carry an oversized cosmetic bag filled with essentials at all times.
As her hand finally made contact with the pouch, she grabbed it quickly and made her way to the bathroom. She placed the bag on the counter and unzipped it, watching the sides bag out due to how full it was. She rummaged through the bag in search of her toothbrush and toothpaste, when in her haste she accidentally grabbed a tampon. She stared at it for a moment, a look of deep thought coming over her face.
Oh. Oh.
___Or: Mel finds out she's pregnant and confides in Dana. This is how everyone finds out.

Summary
Dr. Melissa King was rarely the villain in anyone’s story.
She was immediately loved by everyone she met. Maybe not understood, but loved nonetheless.
Melissa King was the protagonist. The underdog everyone wanted to see win. The adorable if awkward Disney princess made of sunshine that was followed by chipmunks and bluebirds.

Summary
"I have had a very bad day," Mel began steadily. Frank nodded slowly, his eyebrows lowering even more at the intensity in her gaze. "My head hurts. God, my whole body hurts. I need… I need a distraction right now. Something to turn my brain off for a little while."
"O-okay? Like… what?" She almost turned to look away, but Frank lowered his head to keep her eyes trained on him. "Do you wanna watch a movie or something?"
Mel almost laughed. He was so sweet. So unassuming of her.
"Frank, I need to get fucked."
A few weeks after an innocent evening turned intimate, Mel has kept Frank at arms length. Her fears of ruining their friendship, of making work awkward and struggling to find time to date, has made her wary of moving forward with him romantically. But after a disastrous shift at work, Mel needs help clearing her mind… even if it might continue to complicate their already strained relationship.

Summary

Mel is interested in being a submissive. Frank is interested in anything Mel might ever want.

Summary
“I’m jealous.” It escapes before she can let herself back out, “That my sister has a sex life, and I don’t.”
She doesn’t know why she’s admitting that to him. She honestly doesn’t. It’s embarrassing.
“Right there with you.” His voice is low, “How long–?”
She chews at the bottom of her lip, doing the mental math, “Three years…You?”
“Thirteen months.”
Warmth pools in between her legs, and she clutches his hand like it’s a lifeline.
It’s barely a whisper, she’s so afraid to say it,
“Close the trunk.”
---
“Wait, holy shit, King–” The wand stills inside of her as Trinity freezes the frame.
“What?” She asks, “God, it didn’t nick something, did it? I’m not about to bleed to death?”
“No, but you might pass out.” Trinity answers, “Maybe?”
“What is it?” She tries to sit up, but Trinity’s already turning the ultrasound monitor around to show her.
Her heart stills as she takes in the tiny flickering heartbeat on the screen in front of her, “Oh–”
