Stede felt fizzy and golden, like a champagne bottle someone had shaken up. Full of wild, unfamiliar urges. He wanted to lie down on top of Ed, smother him with the full press of his body weight. He wanted to twist the length of his hair into a rope and then bite down on it like a horse’s bit. He wanted to duck his nose into Ed’s armpit and spend the rest of his life only breathing that specific, delicious musk straight from the source. He wanted to shrink down to the size of beetle and crawl inside Ed’s bellybutton. He wanted to bite the very tip of Ed’s perfect, beautiful nose.
Maybe they should skip Jackie’z, just go straight back to the ship? Back to bed. Stede could feel his face heating, just thinking about it—a reflexive sort of shame. But there was nothing to be ashamed of, was there? He was allowed to have these sort of thoughts about Ed—he’d probably encourage it!

Summary
Ed can hear birdsong. Birdsong signalling that something in the ecosystem has shifted, dramatically. In a way that was impossible to notice when you’re immersed in it. And it hits him all at once, the realisation that the last ten years are coming to an end, that his period of bare bones survival is going to start shifting into something more active, something faster, something with significantly more intent behind it. After all, nobody tells you when the aftermath becomes just…after. Nobody can tell you when you’re going to feel safe enough to start living again.
or: Ten years after the world ended, Ed's running out of reasons to stay alive. Until one turns up on his literal doorstep, forcing him to reevaluate his definition of hope.

“I heard you’re a writer,” Blackbeard says.
There’s a sudden rustling sound as Blackbeard kicks something across the floor. Frenchie bends down to retrieve it, and sees that it’s a notebook. Wide and empty, like that one Lucius used to carry around with him.
“Write us a better ending then.”
(Captain Blackbeard has heard about Frenchie’s ‘bit of fanfiction.’ He asks him to write a better ending for his and Stede’s story. Frenchie tries his best but soon other people want to tell the story the way it should have gone, including Fang, Lucius, Ivan, Jim, and ultimately Ed. In the act of surviving and telling stories together, relationships are considered, examined, and developed. Meanwhile, a ship trailing seagulls grows closer and closer on the horizon.)
