Summary
He cleans the filth of Hell away from her soul and it burns. Not like fire, no, but like a steaming bath on the edge of too hot. Agony for a split second before it soothes, before it heals.
Her skin feels scrubbed raw and bloody. The hand does not leave her arm and it’s grip only grows tighter as they take flight.
They rise and he is purifying her, carving out the dried blood from beneath her fingernails, scraping it from the roots of her hair, from the inside of her eyelids. Will there be anything left after the holy light fades? She doesn’t know if there’s enough of her humanity left after the corruption is washed away to survive.
The holy light holds her with so much tenderness she could cry.
It’s been so long since she’s been held.

If she died today, Hyacinth hoped he would live knowing she loved him like her mother loved her. Fully, for all the time she could. She hoped he could find his way back to his dad, to know that he was loved by him too, so incredibly much even though his father didn't know he was more than a thought and dream for a brighter future.
If she died today, she hoped she would take Tom Riddle with her.
If she died today, she would die making sure her son grew up in a world that was better than the one he was born into.
He fell asleep in that peaceful way only a baby can, not knowing the danger, not knowing what lingered everywhere, the smell of death and blood and fear. It was all he knew, it was home to him.

“You.”
She shot upright, wand summoned to hand with a surge of newfound strength and rising before a wave of dizziness took her over and sapped the energy from her again. Severus Snape, traitor, murderer, stood a handful of feet away, going through a box of vials and watching her with expressionless eyes.
“Expelliarmus,” He said, with a tone like he was scolding her in class and her wand was tossed from her hand once again, “Lie back down before you die, again.”

That’s what she could give, could carve out for herself in the dark, socked feet against stone floor as she crept along the passageway. They were meant for her to be unseen, to be quiet, unknown, unheard, but in her eyes they were a sanctuary, a house of her own within the palatial manor.
