Summary
Peter had acclimated to life in the 21st century remarkably well, partially due to his wonderful adopted mom, May Parker. She had taken in the little 10-year-old after he had been found beneath a frozen lake - still frozen, and still alive.
Now 26, Peter is working on his second PhD and working as a photographer for the Daily Bugle. Due to an incident in a lab when he was a teenager, he also just so happens to be a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man on the side.
Peter is normal. Or at least, as normal as a guy with spider powers and who is technically almost a century old can be. He's made a life for himself.
But there's a hole where his brother used to be.

Aka: Peter Parker and Bucky Barnes were once siblings in the 40s, but after Bucky's death, Peter gets frozen in a lake, resurfacing around the same time as Steve is found in the arctic.
Under the impression Bucky is dead, Peter bumps into new Congressman James Barnes at a gala.

Summary
The Avengers thought it would be a simple mission. Kill the giant, sixty foot worm monsters, head home and maybe take an hour long shower to get the worm guts off.
