She was absolutely the kid that the teachers depised or loved, and most hated her. She'd watched with jealousy as teachers cooed over students that did not deserve the special treatment. The woman’s eyes widened, and her hand reached out, not quite touching Rumi, but close. “Not that you’re not beautiful, because wow, you-” She stopped, a look of realisation crossed her face “-I mean, no, wait, no, you are beautiful, but I wasn’t hitting on you, I have a girlfriend-”
Rumi ignored her chest squeezing.
“-A stunning girlfriend, Mira. I mentioned her, right? My girlfriend Mira-” The woman stopped abruptly and lowered her head down into her arms. “Jeez, Zoey, stop rambling at the deaf woman.” It was muffled, but Rumi heard it.
Silenced by grief, Rumi’s world is transformed when she crosses paths with Mira and Zoey, who guide her toward a voice she thought was lost forever.
