"Oh, maybe you were free,/Before my blackened wing covered you,/I took the sing from your song/I made a bed,/Where you don't belong." - Ben Howard, 'Esmerelda'.
“You are the Knight of the Laughing Tree. You disguised yourself as a man and entered the lists?” His tone is caught somewhere between skepticism and… wonder?
“Yes,” she nods in a clipped fashion.
His brow furrows. “Lady Eddara, why?”
“To avenge the honor of a friend,” she replies, and it is almost too easy to slip into the role. To… well, to pretend she were like Lyanna. That she did such wild things without hesitation. That she was so ironclad in her convictions. That she… that she still had dreams. It is alarmingly easy, to pretend.
(Hastily attempting to hide the evidence of her sister's brief time as the Knight of the Laughing Tree, Eddara Stark is discovered by Rhaegar. In an effort to spare Lyanna from Aerys' wroth, Edda claims the shield and armor as her own, and the next day, unwillingly claims a crown of winter roses as well.)

"And war is all you've ever seen/Your war behind the screen/And all it means to me." - Black Math, 'Lapse'.
Careful, she tells herself. They have not delighted over you as queen, either. Plain and thick and flat of body, when they could have had some great beauty like Princess Rhaena or a little dollish darling like Daenaera Velaryon. And that is why you need to be crowned. And why we must have some sort of progress. Something. Anything, to prove to the people their king is a miserable, sullen child no longer, that he is competent and can force a smile and raise a hand in recognition in public. Else this will be a long, hard life for you, whether he comes to like you or no
(Aegon III chooses plain faced Barba Bolton as his bride, who came south to beg aid for her starving people. Three years later, a royal progress is debated.)

“You are clever,” she says, sounding a little surprised, and bemused, too, as if she had never considered it before. “You will have to set a good example for your siblings.”
“I thought it was just one,” he ventures.
She shakes her head, and seems on the verge of smiling, though it passes. “It would seem I am carrying twins, like as not. A brother and a sister, it will be, I’m sure of it. Brave and beautiful. And you will be their brother. You can teach them things. Useful things. You will know things they don’t, because of what you are.”
(In which Tyrion is the firstborn Lannister child.)

"Oh, drunken gods of slaughter / You know I've always been your favorite daughter." - Florence + the Machine, 'Cassandra'.
“My name is Harrold Darke!” the boy shouts- he truly is young, no more than fourteen or fifteen, Cassandra estimates. He looks vaguely familiar; where has she seen him before? A Darke. She has not been to Duskendale in years. Then she realizes. Court. He squired for one of the Kingsguard. His uncle, Ser Steffon. He wore cream and red there; now he is dressed so plainly, he could be mistaken for a peddler, his clothes so travel-stained and rumpled.
“I come on behest of Ser Steffon of the Kingsguard!” He is straining to be heard over the wind and the screaming of the birds; flecks of spittle land on Ser Bruce’s gleaming shield. Maris’ nose wrinkles in disgust. “A grave wrong has been done! King Viserys has died, and Prince Daemon and his lady wife conspire to take the throne from your mother, Princess Rhaenyra! My lord master has ridden for Dragonstone with the crown of the King, but he bid me come here to you!”
(In which the Four Storms have a Baratheon for a father, a Targaryen for a mother and four dragons between them.)

Summary
"Elm, she hates mankind and waits, 'til every gust be laid
To drop a limb on the head of him that anyway trusts her shade
But whether a lad be sober or sad, or mellow with ale from the horn
He'll take no wrong when he lyeth along 'neath Oak, and Ash, and Thorn." - The Longest Johns, "Oak & Ash & Thorn."Joffrey unsheathed his sword- he was permitted to carry live steel, unlike Willam, who deeply resented his father for it in this moment- raised it up above his head with both hands, and then sliced a frog that had been resting on the stone in half.
Will watched in dull shock at the small gush of blood that spurted out around the halved frog. He didn’t like frogs- had never wanted to catch them the way Arya and Bran had- but he’d never hurt an animal deliberately, either.
…“What?” Joffrey asked, with a mocking lilt. “Did that scare you? Don’t tell me you’re like Robb. He couldn’t take a jape either. Nor handle his steel.”
“I’m nothing like Robb,” Willam snapped, then paused, realizing he’d been rude. “My Prince,” he tacked on, regretfully.
Yet Joffrey seemed pleased by this, rather than outraged.
