"I'm the coolest grandpa out there, Kuzan, but kids nowadays don't listen to their grandparents anymore. Leave a mark, impress him. I only want him to become an upright Marine one day."

    “I’m not that old.”

    “How old are you?”

    “Thirty-five.”

“Ha!” Luffy exclaimed victoriously. “You’re already as good as dead! Gramps, how old are you?”

    “Twenty.”

“See?” the boy teased and stuck his tongue out. Brat. “You’re even older than my grandpa. Gramps, twenty is less than thirty-five, right?”

    “Right.”

“I knew it!” Luffy squeaked. “You’re anchor.”

Garp laughed, seemingly having returned to his good mood. “It’s ancient, Luffy. You’re the anchor!”

    *

“Oh my, why don’t you ask your grandfather? He’s met Roger many times before.”

Luffy pressed his forefinger in a shushing motion against his lips. “Shhhh,” he whispered and frantically turned around. “Not so loud, stupid.”

Kuzan blinked slowly when he realized that his intelligence had been insulted by a five-year-old airhead.

    2

“Your parents are either gone because they’re dead, or because they left you. Doesn’t that make you sad or angry?”

“I don’t know them so I don’t really care if they’re dead,” he answered bluntly. “And if they left,” he shrugged, “I can understand that. I don’t want to stay here either.” A large, toothy smile spread over his face. “I’m gonna go to the sea and experience a lot of adventures!”

“Marines get to experience a lot of adventures.”

“Marines always have to do what others tell them to. I don’t want to listen to anybody.”

“Everyone has to listen to somebody.”

Luffy shook his head. “Not pirates, they do whatever they want.”

“Even a pirate has to listen to their captain.”

“That’s why I’m gonna become the captain!” the child cheered self-assuredly. Kuzan realized that Luffy, though appearing to be an airhead, had extensively thought his plans for the future through.

“What if another, stronger pirate crew comes around to force their will on you? No one will protect you because you’re an outlaw.”

But Luffy’s smile didn’t falter. “No one will force me into anything.”

    "You’re fantasizing.”

His stride came to a halt when Luffy grabbed his coat. “There is one man who can do whatever he wants.”

    “Yeah? Who’s that?”

“The Pirate King! I’m going to find the One Piece, become the Pirate King and be free!”

    *

“It is dangerous. The Marines, the World Government, bounty hunters and other pirates will target you.”

Luffy giggled. “Of course, silly. It wouldn’t be exciting if it wasn’t dangerous. That’s part of the adventure!”

    *

“It is my duty to exterminate potential criminals.”

His grip around the ice-blade tightened when the neutral expression morphed into a smile. Luffy kept on staring into his eyes, his coal-black irises shining in mirth and glee, as he said, “Okay.”

“What?” he managed to ask, his voice steady despite the surprise and confusion that consumed him.

Luffy giggled. “I guess that’s it.”

Kuzan knew fear of death. Every human being, even a child who couldn’t grasp the concept of death, had it instilled in them. It was something instinctual that every creature with some sort of consciousness possessed.

This peace, this acceptance in the face of ceasing to exist – Kuzan had only seen it once before. For the first time in years, Kuzan felt a chill run down his spine.

He melted the ice. “Do you want to die?”

"Of course, not. But when it ends, it ends. I did all I could do.”

It was that, what bothered him. Kuzan had seen people smile, even laugh when met with the prospect of death. But it had almost always been an act, ironic, or at least bittersweet.
But Luffy had looked genuinely at ease. There was no deeper meaning behind this placid serenity; just a grotesque form of acceptance that should go against human nature.

    *

"I can’t be selfless. Not like that. This is my life. Gramps can do with his life whatever he wants; I’m going to make with mine whatever I want.”

It was then that Kuzan finally understood why Luffy had been so nonchalant about his parents possibly having abandoned him. The boy believed in freedom and following your dreams. If his parents had left to be free and fulfill their dreams, then that was okay with him; He planned on doing the exact same thing.

This kid would live fast and steer his life to a sudden crash.

A romantic thought for so many people; They all wanted to live wild, yet no one had the courage to actually do it - of course, they didn’t. It went against a basic human need, namely the desire for safety. Luffy wasn’t interested in that and Kuzan had yet to decide whether that was a clear indicator for insanity.

Monkey D. Luffy would live his life to the fullest extent; wild, fast and always on the lookout for the next source of fun. But he would also die young. Childish, immature, innocent but happy, he would leave this world soon.

“I don’t really feel like moving,” he adds, irritated. Every part of his body aches. Whatever was up with Strawhat’s awakening has him intensely aware of every abused nerve ending, every bit of bruised and bent-up muscle, every stretched-snapped blood vessel.

He was defeated. He could have died. The knowledge is exhilarating.

He was defeated. He didn’t die. That’s not how it’s supposed to go at all.

“I need a drink,” he says.

Linlin spits out a bunch of shark skin. It hits him in the arm. “There’s lava,” she says. “Drink that.”

“You try being used as a jumprope by a giggling child,” he grumbles. His tendons still haven’t recovered. He feels distended. Wrung out.

    *

He doesn't look like an Emperor, dirt-scuffed and drunk on joy. He looks like the man who beat Kaidou, though. He fixes Kaidou with a long, indecipherable stare.

And then he shrugs and stretches an arm out to try to snatch something off the grill while the cook's back is turned.

"It's fine," Strawhat says, not even bothering to look. "He's not here to fight."

It's correct, if deeply insulting. He already lost. Strawhat's near-immediate dismissal of him stings, but he can recognize that the more powerful pirate here is entitled to it.

    *

"If you're here to join our crew," she says, "please don't."

"Why would I want to join your crew," Kaidou says.

"I don't know! It's happened before! It keeps happening!"

    The swordsman nods.

"I am not here to join your crew," Kaidou feels the need to clarify. "I find you all pathetic. Besides Strawhat."

When he wonders how his crew lost to this disorderly band of ten, he just comes up embarrassed.

"I don't know why I'm here," he says again.

"Then leave," says the navigator. But the cook is twirling over to them with food for three.

    It does look delicious.

"Eat it, shit-tyrant," says the cook. "Before Luffy starts stealing off plates. And don't go starving people ever again."

I'm going to make a world, screams Strawhat, thunder in the sky, crackling with power, where my friends can eat as much as they want!

"Well?" says the navigator, laughing too. "Are you leaving?"

    What the hell.

    He eats.

    *

"I can't believe he allows you to just sit out here like this."

It's tempting to snatch her up. Fly off with her just to prove he can, to prove her faith wrong, to break her of that obnoxious idealism the whole crew wears in their smiles. It's much too nice a day out to get turned into rubber and tied in a bow by an irate Strawhat.

"Does he know I had more islands," Kaidou tries.

"It probably hasn't occurred to him," Nico Robin says. "I imagine he would find administration lethally boring."

    *

"He didn't want it," repeats Kaidou. "The ancient weapon Pluton."

Nico Robin shrugs. "I asked, he wasn't interested. Besides, if he ever changes his mind, Franky can just build him another. Wouldn't be hard."

He can build an ancient weapon? He could have built an ancient weapon this whole time? How does Strawhat find these people?

    *

If either of Roger's annoying cabin boys get their grubby little hands on anything of Kaidou's, he's going to strangle himself. "I'd rather," snarls Kaidou, "the man who defeated me be the one to claim my former territories."

"Oh, okay!" chirps Strawhat. "You shoulda just said that to start with!"

    *

The navigator is already pulling a roll of thick yellow paper and a pencil out of her backpack, her previous terror apparently vanished. "Alright. Southwest of here, you said? Do you know coordinates? Or an approximate distance? How many days' sailing it would be from here?"

Kaidou blinks. Looks over at Nico Robin, who is grinning. The navigator snaps her fingers irritably to pull his attention back, seating herself by his knee and unrolling her paper across her lap. "Come on! Do you have any idea how few decent navigational resources there are for the New World? You're giving me every detail you have!"

    *

The Adam Wood deck takes his weight easily. Her crew may be of questionable quality, but Thousand Sunny is an undeniably incredible ship.

    *

"Do you realize how expensive you are to feed? I'm the closest thing to a quartermaster you've got, I make the grocery budget-"

She... understands the value of money? She understands that resources don't grow on trees? She actually has a sensible bone in her body? Strawhat is allowing her to whack him over the head as punctuation?

"Kaidou can run the islands," Strawhat says. "But Nami gets to decide what we do with the money and stuff. So she's in charge."

    "What," Kaidou says.

    "What," Nami says.

"And Kaidou already said he wanted to admintirade- adminitrait- a dinner plate-" He frowns tremendously. "Run them. So that's good!"

“Oh, I just don’t want to see a happy young man like yourself missing out. You’ll find someone special to make you happy someday.”

Luffy frowns even deeper. “I already have people to make me happy!” The fact that this cashier thinks anyone could is complete bullshit.

    1

“You’re the best doctor, y’know?” Luffy says out of the blue, and Chopper almost chokes on his cotton candy. “You always make me feel better after a fight, and you’re also so funny and the best to play hide ‘n seek with! You’re so cool! Sabo always used to tell me that I needed to get a great doctor and he’d be thrilled because I’ve found the best out there!”

    2

“I’m really glad you’re here, Jinbe.”

Jinbe blinks. Luffy continues, “I wasn’t worried when you stayed behind to protect your crew- you’re Jinbe! Of course you were fine! But I’m so excited you’re here now!” He tilts his head from where it was resting against Jinbe’s chest, and grins brightly. “You’re super smart and good at steering! You’re the best helmsman! And I missed you!”

Luffy leans his head against Jinbe’s chest again, and says, “I’m just really glad you’re here.” Jinbe lets out a breath, and carefully wraps his arms around Luffy. He ignores the telltale signs of tears stinging at the backs of his eyes.

    3

“I already know it’s gonna be the best, though! Sanji’s food is the best!” And it’s not as if Luffy doesn’t compliment Sanji’s food on at least a weekly basis, but Sanji still can’t help but flush slightly at the praise.

Mortifyingly, though, Luffy doesn’t just stop there. “I’m so glad Sanji’s my cook! I remember always hoping when I was a kid to get an amazing cook to make me amazing food, and now I have because I have you!” Luffy pauses for a moment, then adds on, “You can also do that super cool thing where you can light your foot on fire, and your dream is super super awesome! Sanji’s the coolest!”

    4-5

“Shishi, yeah! Nami is so smart and makes such good maps and always knows exactly where we need to go!” Nami looks away, completely unable to fight down her pleased grin.

“That's my job,” she says, embarrassed, trying to hide the way tears are pricking at the corners of her eyes. Luffy just looks at her, delighted.

He then turns his attention to Robin, saying, “And Robin is also so smart! You know so much about history and your powers are so fun and you're also so funny!” Nami looks over to Robin. She just looks soft, the beginnings of tears shining in her eyes. Nami relates completely. Luffy's smile somehow grows larger, and he exclaims, “I have the coolest crew in the world!”

    Unbearable fondness fills Nami’s chest.

    6

“Yeah!” Oblivious to Usopp’s rapidly rising blush, Luffy carries on. “Usopp is so cool and makes the best art and is the best sniper around! You drew our flag – that’s so awesome! And you haven’t done painting in a while but this-” Luffy gestures at the simple painting that Usopp had been working on- “Is so cool! Usopp’s the best!” Luffy nods, as if he’s made a point, even though it’s only the two of them around.

    7

“You build such cool stuff and you’re so funny and you can do such cool stuff with your hair!” Franky’s face has gone pure red. “I have the best shipwright!” He says happily. Franky’s face goes through a rapid series of emotions, eventually settling on what can only be described as love.

“And I have the best captain!”

    8

“Y’know, I’ve always wanted a musician,” Luffy starts casually. “Ace used to always think it was silly that I wanted a musician more than anything else, but I knew it was important!”

Brook feels a knot forming in his non-existent throat. “Brook always plays music to wake us up and make sure we’re all happy! That’s the musician’s job, and Brook’s the best at it! I have the best musician!”

    9

Luffy grins up at Zoro. “Just thinkin’ about how I have the best swordsman!”

Zoro shakes his head fondly. He readjusts Luffy’s hat so that it’s not shadowing his eyes as much. “Not quite there yet, captain. Still got a ways to go, future Pirate King.”

    *

“She said something about how you guys weren’t enough to make me happy- about how I needed to find a special someone which is stupid because you guys are my favorite people in the world.” Huffing, Luffy continues, “You guys are already the best. Why do I need someone else?”

Everyone’s quiet, for a moment. Luffy glances around, tilting his head in confusion. Nami’s wiping at her eyes- so are Usopp and Chopper and Franky and Brook, too. Zoro, Sanji, Robin, and Jinbe are smiling, though, which is good. “Why are you guys sad?” Luffy asks, looking between his crying friends.

“We’re not.” Sanji’s the one to speak up, a soft smile on his face. “We’re just-” Sanji pauses, swallowing heavily. “You’re one of our favorite people too, Luffy.”

“Cell death is the reason why we all die in the first place,” Chopper says. “If Luffy’s cells don’t die, that could mean-”

“That he won’t die,” Jinbe cuts in, voice full of wonder. A hush falls over the room, and everyone turns to stare at Luffy. For a moment, Sanji thinks he’s actually comprehended what’s happening. Luffy finally opens his mouth to speak, and-

    “Oh, so mystery cells! Cool!”

There’s a resounding slapping sound as everyone facepalms. “I’m going to call Torao,” Chopper mumbles into his hooves.

    “Yeah, good idea,” everyone mumbles.

    -

“If you were anyone else,” Law says, “If you told me this I’d have thought you were on drugs and hung up on the spot.”

“I thought I was insane,” Chopper responds. “But you see what I mean, right?!”

Law frowns at the petri dish and doesn’t answer. Instead, he spins on his heel and brings out his sword. Chopper reflexively yelps when Law chops Luffy in half, straight down the middle.

    “Hey!” Luffy whines. “Rude!”

“Deal with it,” Law says absently. He chops Luffy up a few more times, placing his decapitated head on Chopper’s desk and laying his legs out on the bed. Chopper pokes Luffy’s cheek, blown outwards as he pouts.

“Could’ve at least given me warning,” Luffy mumbles. Law responds by chopping Luffy’s head in half again. “Hey!”

Chopper giggles and pats Luffy on the head. Heads.

    *

    “So,” Jinbe says. “Immortality.”

“This is insane,” Nami says. Franky nods.

    “Absolutely bonkers.”

“We don’t know it’s that!” Chopper chimes in. He hesitates. “But…it seems to be pointing that way.”

“He does seem to be more energetic than he used to be,” Sanji says, watching Luffy talking to himself on his special seat. He laughs, then, and adds on, “Didn’t think that was even possible.”

“Reminds me of when we first met,” Usopp says fondly.

Brook hums. “Forever is a long time,” he muses, plucking a random tune on his violin.

“At least we won’t have to see Luffy face a horribly brutal death!” Robin says, smiling.

    “Ah! Robin, you’re scary!”

“Living forever, huh,” Zoro considers. He grins. “Gonna be a lot of swordsmen to fight.”

For a moment, the crew just stares at him. “You know,” Nami says slowly, “Somehow I still haven’t gotten used to the effortless confidence you have.”

“As much as I hate to agree with the mosshead,” Sanji says, “He’s got the right idea.”

Jinbe laughs heartily. “Agreed!” Franky grins, and pats the railing he’s leaning on.

“Eternity’s got nothin’ on Sunny! She’ll carry us forever!”

“I can’t even count the number of ruins I’d be able to study...”

“Plus,” Usopp says, and throws an arm around Chopper’s shoulders. “Spending eternity with friends?”

“Yohohoho! There couldn’t be a better gift!”

Chopper bounces and grins up at them. “I can’t wait!”

For a moment, they all just look at each other, their happiness almost palpable. Nami leans on Zoro’s shoulder. “Freest crew in the world, huh,” she says. Zoro shrugs, and gives her his own grin.

“No reason that shouldn’t mean being free to adventure forever,” he says, and Nami can’t help but laugh.

    *

“I married Kohza and then left the throne to him.” Nami stares. Vivi grins, and adds on, “The tax benefits of marriage are great, didn’t you know?”

Nami cackles, and fuck Vivi missed her. “You insane woman,” she says fondly, pulling Vivi back into a hug. “So you married him so he could become king and then ditched?”

“I made sure Alabasta was ready, of course,” Vivi defends herself. “But, yeah, basically.”

Nami tugs her out the door and onto the deck. “Hey, dumbasses, guess who’s here?”

    A pause.

    “VIVI?!”

    *

A banner hangs above them – CONGRATS, NAMI! – and she counts at least fifteen party poppers being fired at once, mainly by the dumbass trio. “NAMI DID IT! NAMI DID IT! NAMI DID IT!”

    Nami loves this crew.

    *

    “We challenge you together.”

“My swords-” Grace places a hand on her scabbard.

Jackie draws a pistol and flips it in the air, catching it easily. “And my sniping.”

Zoro and Usopp share a look. “At the same time?” Usopp asks doubtfully.

“Yeah!” Jackie looks at Usopp. “After all, isn’t it the job of the sniper to protect the fighters during a battle?”

Usopp can’t help but laugh. “Oh, I like you.”

    *

“When you’ve trained, and sailed, and become the best in your craft- come find us.”

He meets Grace’s eyes, and Usopp meets Jackie’s.

    “We’ll be waiting for you.

Usopp is the best sniper in the world. He never seeked it out, it was never his dream, but he knows all the same. Zoro’s held the title of the greatest swordsman for almost as long as Usopp can remember. Yet, somehow, Usopp knows that someday, Grace and Jackie are going to boast those titles.

    Bookmarker's Notes

They used to wait. Let the children grow up, before stripping their minds away.

Then, one day, someone in power said: Why?

Children are noisy and greedy and cruel. They are messy and wilful and their bodies designed to appeal to the eyes of adults. Adults who get emotionally attached. Adults who make exceptions.

Exceptions cannot be made. It destabilises the system. Breeds discontent and rebellion.

Only the chosen may have children.

He is not chosen. Barely more than a serf, he works for the company but is far from irreplaceable. He'd hoped and prayed his son would be better, would be chosen, by the time he came of age to be wiped.

    His son is not chosen.

He doesn't know about the decision until it's too late. Until he gets home and his son is gone and his friends tell him to shut up about it.

Less than a week later, serfs deliver a small box to his door. His son, now his personal serf, his reward for compliance, is tucked neatly inside.

His eyes are half-lidded. He breathes, he blinks, but that which makes him his son has been murdered.

There is a helmet within the box. A small local broadcaster. A slip of information. Until his son- until his son's body reaches the age of 18, it is his to use as he wills. Domestic service. If the company has no particular need for him at 18, he can apply to purchase his use for the rest of his life.

    If he lives that long.

That night, as he cradles the warm living corpse of his baby boy, he thinks of how easily he could cover his small nose and mouth. Could end the desecration of his son's memory. The company would no doubt wipe him for it if he did. His son is just property now. Theirs, on loan, until he's old enough to be used for labor. All of them in service to the greater, communal good.

    He thinks of murder-suicide.

He finishes the day, goes home, checks on his son and holds a pillow in his hand for almost an hour.

He tips a small tube of nutrient juice down his throat instead. His son won't feed himself without external instruction, without puppetry. Repetitive instructions can be planted, in a 'do X until Y or until told to stop' fashion if they're simple enough, but he thinks that might be worse. To violate his son's mind just to make his body give the illusion that there's still someone inside it.

He eats his own supper, then vomits it back up.

The next day, he goes to work.

    And the next.

    And the next.

    And the next.

Nobody talks about it. A few more disappear.

    Nobody talks about them.

One night, he pushes the pillow down hard. Small hands don't stir, don't try to stop him, to survive, so he can only wait until the thin, narrow chest stops moving.

Then he throws the pillow away and drops to his knees, hysterical, drags his son to the floor to give him CPR, forcing air into him, shoving at his chest, sobbing apologies, desperate to undo what he'd done.

    All of it. Everything.
Every failure as a father, as a man, as a human.

His son coughs and breathes again, but he's still dead behind his eyes.

But he meets new people. Talks about work with them. Learns what other obscenities the company is developing, all discussed with the careful detachment of scientific interest.

Whichever department you go, there are nothing but cowards like him.

He learns about the mermen and maids, serfs internally reconfigured to obtain oxygen when underwater, that they can labor in the dark and depths, perform maintenance, all at so much less of an expense than through specialised machinery.

How clever, he agrees. That night, he dreams of what might have been. If he'd been good enough to be placed on that project sooner. Dreams of sneaking the treatment to his son, and then abandoning him to the ocean to live alone and afraid - but unviolated.

Almost another six months later - and several nights of throwing up everything he'd ever eaten, as he'd practiced moving his son around the house and set him to doing simple exercises designed to repair the damage done by his idleness - he's ready. He's built enough. His son's body is as fit as he can make it.

He's saved up his leave. He has almost three weeks to get this done.

He has food and water and a bucket nearby.

    This is stupid.

    Insane.

There's no chance of success, not really. He knows the boosters will cover the range to where he needs to go, but he's only seen a fraction of the path to get there.

    This is stupid.

But his son is already gone. Abandoned in a ditch on the outskirts of the city. From the amount of small fingers and hands sticking up through the top layer of muck, he'd been far from the first to do so.

    No.

He breathes deep, puts the helmet on.

    His son will be avenged.

All he needs, is a little help from the inside.

“It’s called amnesia,” Dragon tells him, voice deep and slow and calm, but Ace’s head is still spinning regardless. “Nothing we’ve ever tried has broken through the memory loss, but- there’s always a chance at recovery. Especially with exposure to familiar things from before the inciting incident.”

Sabo shifts, a subtle slide of his weight from one leg to the other. He’s anxious, uncertain, trying not to show it. Ready to bolt at the slightest surprise, whether that’s a thug jumping them in the trash heaps or a tiger leaping out of the trees.

“You don’t have to stay,” Ace tells him, dully, the words coming out in a fog. He doesn’t need to make Sabo wait with him. He doesn’t. He’s spent ten years missing his first brother, but Ace has made do, and he isn’t about to force someone to stick around if they don’t know him, don’t have any reason to care-

“I don’t have anywhere else I need to be right now.”

    Bookmarker's Notes

There’s a dead boy next to Ace.

Except not, because the big guy who introduced himself as Dragon (Monkey D. Dragon, Luffy’s dad, and isn’t that a kick after Ace already thought he was similar to Gramps-) has just finished up a slow and careful explanation.

Sabo, twenty years old instead of ten, hair longer and face scarred, but still wearing his dumb fancy hat and napkin.

“You don’t have to stay,” Ace tells him, dully, the words coming out in a fog. He hasn’t got the energy to be angry right now, or upset, or- anything, honestly.

"Tell me about this Terminal place where we met - I bet we found all kinds of cool junk, huh?”

No one has said where the ship is going, and Ace hasn’t asked. Isn’t like it matters, other than ‘away from Impel Down’ and its six layers of hell.

Better to stay curled up on the infirmary cot with Luffy. To keep talking to Sabo, rambling through one dumb childhood story after another, starting with the early days and their pirate fund and moving on to the way all three of them nearly spat the stolen sake back out when they shared a drink to become brothers. “None of us did, though,” he tacks on at the end, smiling in spite of himself. One thumb runs back and forth at the edge of Luffy’s hairline, ruffling just a couple of strands of hair. “It tasted terrible, but the whole thing wouldn’t have counted if we didn’t swallow, so.”

Sabo makes a soft noise. His eyes are half closed, gaze distant. “Y’know, I’ve never cared for sake that I can remember.”

    *

Dragon comes and goes during the stories. Checking on them, Ace figures; also figures the guy is allowed, after carrying both him and Luffy all the way up from Level Six, not putting either of them down until they’d all gotten onto his waiting ship and into this infirmary. The man’s expression hardly changed the whole way, not until the very last moment, when he was bending over to ease Ace onto the bed, Luffy still clutched in his arms.

Luffy let out a weak sound at that point. Like he was hurting. And Dragon’s whole face spasmed, giving Ace a brief glimpse of pain as deep as any he’d ever seen. One large finger just barely ghosted over the curve of his brother’s cheek, and then Dragon stepped back, grim stoic expression back in place, keeping a close eye on the medic folks as they moved in.

Since then, the Revolutionary Leader has kept his distance, visiting at odd intervals but never coming within arm’s reach of the bed, dark eyes looking over Luffy, and Ace, and Sabo too. Like he’s- worried. About all of them. Kinda reminds Ace of how Dadan would sometimes hover when he or Lu got hurt worse than usual, honestly.

Other people come and go. Lots of folks were let out of Impel Down by the Revs, and most of them loaded up onto hijacked marine ships to escape the Calm Belt, but there are a few who apparently were helping Luffy get deeper into the prison and wound up chasing after Dragon. A clown guy who Ace thinks he vaguely recognizes (might have helped to get a better look, but all he did was poke his head in through the door and yell some stuff and leave again) along with a couple of dudes who first introduce themselves with numbers, then names, and then follow THAT up by saying Luffy was the one who got them arrested in the first place.

“I get it,” Ace interrupts when one of them, the shapeshifter who keeps striking poses, tries to explain that he’s gotten fully on board with being Luffy’s friend by now. “I tried to kill him a bunch of times when we first met as kids, but he just kept following me anyway until we became brothers.”

    *

When goddamn Red-Haired Shanks walks through the door, looking downright scary with the intense expression on his face. It eases the moment he spots Ace and Luffy, though.

“Hey, Buggy! I’m checking on our little brother!”

    What.

    What?

“What,” both Ace and Sabo ask in the same, dumbstruck tone.

Dragon sucks in a sharp breath. The clown, Buggy- no wait, Buggy the Clown, Ace DOES recognize him- he sputters, pulling up short. “You- what- no, that, that little Straw Hat twerp is NOT-! I refuse-!!”

“Not Luffy,” Shanks says. He straightens back up, and looks straight at Ace, who feels abruptly cold despite the warmth still in the man’s voice. “Roger’s son.”

    *

"I shouldn’t be surprised Anchor’s sleeping during all of this. Pipsqueak could snore straight through a round of Binks’s Sake when my crew was trying to shout down Party’s Bar.”

    *

    “Sabo. Brother number three.”

THAT makes Shanks throw his head back and laugh. “Three of you! And not a single one in the marines, man, I bet that drives Garp up the wall!”

Hands scoop him up. Sabo yelps, grabbing instinctively, only to stare as the person holding him by the armpits laughs again, that distinctive, wheezy, high-pitched delight that is undeniably: “Luffy?”

“Sabo!” His brother cheers. His- adult brother. Or at least a lot closer to adulthood than being seven years old. Same smile, same hair, same little scar curving under his left eye, and above it all is the straw hat Sabo could never forget, just for the sheer number of times he or Ace have needed to grab the stupid thing before it could be blown away on the wind.

“He’s the doctor on my crew!” What? What-? “But I wasn’t with him when that weird lady showed up, I was with- oooh, hold on-” The world spins. Sabo finds himself tucked against Big Luffy’s chest, and- there’s a huge scar, two diagonal slashes across his chest, the skin gnarled and burned- “Dragon! Hey! Were you coming to help? It’s okay, I got here first!”

Shadows move. Someone much bigger than Luffy steps forward out of an alley, their whole body hidden by a dark cloak. “...you know me?”

“Mmhm!” Luffy nods several times, before looking back down at Sabo. “This is Dragon, he’s cool! He’s got an army that fights the government! My Sabo says he’s a really good boss, and- oh, yeah, he’s my dad, but also-” He rambles on a bit longer, but Sabo’s a little stuck on the dad remark, staring up at this guy. Despite the hood casting most of his face in shadow, he’s pretty sure ‘Dragon’ also looks stunned. “Anyway, you should go with him! Before that stupid World Noble blows you up! This way you won’t lose your memories of me and Ace, and you can still go be Chief of Staff!”

    Me and Ace

“Wait-” Sabo squirms as he’s held out, he can’t just leave- Luffy’s stretchy hands let go, and bigger, rougher ones catch Sabo as he drops, a noise of surprise coming from Dragon- “Wait, Luffy- my Luffy, and Ace! They’re out there! In the fire!”

The grin on Big Luffy’s face vanishes. His head turns, towards the wall that surrounds Goa, and the intense glow reflected by the clouds overhead casts his eyes in darkness. “Not for long.”

He moves away a few steps. Pushes up the sleeve of the red shirt he’s wearing. Cocks his fist back to throw a punch, and then-

    Then

    It’s like the world shifts.

There’s a pressure, spreading outward, and Dragon grunts, folding his arms around Sabo. There’s a flicker, like an electric spark, a glow like the one of the nearby flames, except it’s coming from Luffy, fiercer and brighter until it bursts into light-

    “Gum-Gum PISTOL!”

It’s his stupid move. The one he can never land against his chosen target, instead hitting random trees, or rocks, or his own face on the rebound. Except- that’s seven year old Luffy.

This version of him doesn’t miss.

This Luffy punches the Great Gates, right in the center of all that reinforced steel, and the Gates-

    crumple

    and in an instant

    collapse

The massive impact as they hit the ground drives back the flames directly outside, unleashes a shockwave that would’ve knocked Sabo right off his feet if he wasn’t being sheltered by arms as big as Garp’s. Elsewhere in Edge Town, he can hear startled shouts, barking dogs, yowling cats.

Luffy’s extended fist comes back to him with a quiet, deafening snap of rubber.

And yet, when he looks over his shoulder, it’s the same wide grin and gleeful snicker. “Man, I wish I could have done that ages ago! Come on, let’s go find Ace and Little Me!” And with that he’s off, bounding away into the landscape of burning trash heaps, laughter echoing in a manner more alarming than not.

Sabo glances up at Dragon. He’s still a bit stunned, like Gramps just got him with a Fist of Love, staring after Big Luffy with wide eyes. “...are you really his dad?”

“He’s my son,” the man answers after a moment. “But I can’t claim to be his father when I’ve been gone his whole life.” Huh. That’s, honestly more nuanced than Sabo might have expected, from what he knows about Luffy and Garp. “I supposed we’d better follow him.”

    *

(Fuck, were they really that small?)

Ten years old, bruised, wary, one hand behind him to hold Luffy back. “Who are you?”

He smiles. “It’s me, stupid. I’m your brother.” Ace sucks in a sharp breath. Luffy peers around him, face scrunched. “I’m sorry it took me so long to remember, Ace. To come back. I’m sorry I didn’t get there in time.” A photo in the newspaper, a body on the ground, a hole where a living soul should have been. “I’m still your brother, I swear, I swear-” And now he’s crying, too, bent forward, gloved fingers digging into the ash-coated dirt.

    “...Sabo?”

Smaller fingers grasp at his hands.

    “You’re- you are Sabo. Right?”

It’s all he can do to nod.

And then there’s a small body burrowing in next to him, stick-thin arms stretching to wrap around his chest, hugging tight, while another shoves in front and center, pushing his shoulders to make him sit up, a scowling little face ducking under the brim of his hat to press their foreheads together. “You’re big,” Ace accuses, and this isn’t the usual formula of his nightmares, “I dunno what happened or why you’re big, but quit crying and help us get out of here, okay? We’ll- we can figure out the rest later.”

“My new granddaughter!” Garp booms upon their arrival at Dawn Island, perhaps a week later, and if it weren’t for years of carefully practicing her stoic expressions, Robin's jaw would have dropped out of pure shock. “Gonna take her up the mountain this morning, but figured you wouldn’t mind sharing breakfast with us, Emi!”

“One does not simply share a meal with you, Garp,” the stern-faced woman in front of them states. “Besides which, it isn’t even six o’clock in the damn morning. I haven’t put the kettle on yet, let alone started making breakfast!” Her words only make the Vice Admiral laugh, though, and soon enough he and Robin are seated at the counter of a clean and rather pleasant looking bar.

First and foremost, the handful of broken bones she’s attempting to ignore, which are constantly throbbing and impeding her movements. Second and less ignorable, Garp himself, and the- interest he has expressed.

She turns it over in her mind again, the way Garp first addressed her, after stumbling across Robin’s entirely inadequate hiding place on an island swarming with marines: not Devil Child, not monster, not even her full name - no, he simply said ‘ah, you’re the kid Kuzan mentioned’, before scooping Robin up and bounding towards the nearest oceanside cliff, and leaping to the ship anchored some distance away.

...it’s been a long time since anyone simply called her ‘kid’.

Robin continues to sit stiffly, biting her lip, watching the island that nearly spelled her doom become smaller and smaller on the horizon.

“My new granddaughter!” Garp booms upon their arrival at Dawn Island, perhaps a week later, and if it weren’t for years of carefully practicing her stoic expressions, Robin's jaw would have dropped out of pure shock.

Just about the time true daylight begins peeking through the windows, a girl with short green hair comes shuffling down the staircase behind the bar - a little older than Robin, perhaps, if not much taller, and carrying a squirming toddler on her hip. The small child spots Garp, and promptly begins squealing with excitement.

“Luffy!” He shouts back, reaching out a hand. Blearily squinting open one eye, the green-haired girl lifts and plops her charge into that extended palm without so much as breaking stride, clearly used to the Vice Admiral appearing first thing in the morning. Robin watches, bemused in spite of herself, as the girl shuffles onward down the short hallway to the kitchen, and then returns cradling a steaming mug in the crook of her elbow, hands occupied holding bowls of porridge sprinkled with brown sugar and blueberries.

The toddler pauses babbling nonsensical phrases at Garp in order to begin scarfing down said porridge, only switching from his bare fingers to a spoon when the girl puts one into his hands. Then she sits, directly across from Robin, to eat her own breakfast and take periodic sips of tea. Perhaps as much as ten minutes later, long after the toddler has moved on to stealing bits of food from Garp’s plates, dark eyes finally fully open, and the older teen seems to realize there is extra company.

“Oh!” She yelps, sitting up straighter.

“Hello,” Robin can’t help but say, smirking.

But to her surprise, the other girl doesn’t appear at all embarrassed by her lapse - rather, she beams, as if the appearance of a random stranger is cause for delight. “Hi! I’m Makino, nice to meet you!”

    “...thank you? I am- Robin.”

“My new granddaughter,” Garp repeats from earlier, mouth full of sausage links. “You two are about the same age, you should be friends!” Baffling, which really should not surprise Robin after a week at sea with this man, but it only makes Makino smile all the wider.

The toddler’s name is Luffy, and he is apparently the third child Garp has brought to Dawn Island without warning over the years, with Robin as the fourth.

“I was first,” Makino freely admits, folding and stacking an assortment of outgrown blouses, skirts, and dresses for Robin to take ‘up the mountain’, to wherever Garp is planning on hiding her. “But so far you’re the only one who isn’t a baby, which is exciting! Would you rather have more patterns or solids?”

Luffy sits on the blanket beside Robin. He is enamored with grabbing at the wiggling fingers she’s produced out of the soft material with her Devil Fruit, giggling every time they tickle his little palms. Rather than act alarmed or afraid, Makino gasped with awe when Robin first demonstrated her power, and outright cooed over the makeshift toy for her charge.

She’s been alone far too long to entertain the idea of true friendship with anyone, certainly not a nearly-defenseless girl from a backwater island in the East Blue of all places, but... perhaps, just perhaps, Robin won’t mind staying here as her injuries heal.

    *

“Garp has decided I am going to stay here.” The scowling, impossibly, grows even deeper. “By any chance, do you know good ways to sneak off without anyone seeing?”

That makes his expression falter somewhat. “Why?”

“Because the World Government is hunting for me, and I need to be able to escape quickly if they show up.” True. If not fully the truth - Robin would also like to be able to leave in a swift manner if these bandits prove too dangerous to utilize as hosts.

But her choice of fear to share bears fruit, as the little boy’s face turns to surprise, and then a sort of resignation with something brighter lurking just underneath. “You too?”

...maybe there’s more than one reason Garp chose this location as a hiding place for her.

A pair of little kids blink back at him.

Wavy hair, blonde, and ginger. Matching pale eyes, which- which feel familiar, but with the way his mind’s spinning, Ace can’t even begin to figure out why. The shorter kid’s clutching a weird golden disk, etched with symbols like a poneglyph, which Ace can only sort of see with the bigger one standing in the way.

Siblings. He’s looking at a pair of siblings. He remembers standing in front of Luffy like that countless times, blocking his little brother off from getting into trouble-

“Luffy,” he croaks, rolling onto his side, trying to shove at the ground to sit up, “Where’s-?”

Warmth fills the air. Haki. Conqueror’s haki, which Ace has gotten used to feeling from Pops, and just a little while ago Luffy used it to bring the whole battlefield to a standstill. But this doesn’t feel like an admonishment weighing him down, or desperation crashing against motion - this is practically soft, like fur overtop coiled muscle. Friendly, for all that it’s ready to strike.

    Utterly, undeniably Luffy.

So Ace eases back down, while the two little kids twist around to look behind themselves, at a doorway in the round stone room. A moment later, someone steps through.

Sandals on otherwise bare feet. Baggy blue trousers, held up with a bright yellow sash. Red shirt, hanging open, showing off a massive scar on a muscled chest. Dark stubble giving the impression of a beard, shaggy hair framing wide brown eyes-

Ace’s next breath catches in his throat.

It’s- not wrong, really. But it’s not right. That’s a man the kids are running towards, tall with corded muscle and facial hair but also- also- that’s the same tiny smiley-scar that’s been underneath Luffy’s left eye longer than Ace has known him.

And then a hand stretches closer, distorting in a way long familiar, so its fingers can smooth over Ace’s chest, exactly where Akainu’s fist punched through.

Instinctively, he catches that hand, presses it over his beating heart instead.

    *

“Jinbei’s here?” Ace asked, surprised. “You’re meeting with the Sun Pirates?”

Luffy’s head tips to one side. “No? We haven’t seen them in ages.” Then his puzzled expression flickers, replaced with glee. “Oh! Ace doesn’t know! Jinbei’s part of my crew now!”

    “He’s what-?”

“Hey! Guys! Look! The girls found something and it made Ace show up!!”

Several heads turn at his first shout, and Ace gets to see as the recognition hits his brother’s crew, eyes widening and jaws dropping. A dark-skinned man with thick bushy hair who can only be Usopp stumbles back; a tall skeleton that’s apparently somehow alive coughs so hard the guitar in its hands almost falls to the ground.

“Ace?” A woman with long orange hair asks; it takes a second for Ace to recognize Nami, between the different hairstyle and added muscle. “That’s- how is that possible?”

“Dunno!” Luffy cheers, bouncing to a stop. “But we NEED to throw a party!”

For his part, Ace can only shrug and smile at his little brother, even as he keeps studying the different Straw Hats, some of whom he knows, some he doesn’t. There’s a dark-haired woman who keeps looking back and forth between him and Luffy, and a really tall cyborg who’s started crying, and-

“Zoro,” Ace greets, gesturing towards his own face with his free hand. “You know you’re supposed to dodge when someone swings for your face, right?”

The swordsman, taller and broader than ten years ago but also missing an eye, snorts as he lets go of his weapons. “Says the guy who did the opposite of dodging.” A split second later he grimaces, right before Nami smacks the back of his head hard enough to make everyone else wince.

“You hush,” she admonishes, before looking squarely at Ace and bracing both hands against her hips. “And you- how are you not dead?”

Blondie, who’s gone and climbed up onto one of the cyborg’s huge shoulders impressively quickly, points at the gold disk Ginger is balancing on top of Luffy’s head. “Dadan touched that thing and then he showed up!”

    -uh.

    Wait.

Ace twitches hard, first jerking his gaze towards the kid, then dropping it to meet Luffy’s eyes. “Dadan?”

    His brother starts laughing again.

Dadan and Kanga. Kanga and Dadan, who don’t just call Luffy ‘uncle’ as an honorific, but because he is their uncle. Because somehow, someway, amazingly-impossible and impossibly-amazing both, Sabo is alive.

“He lost his memories when he got blown up,” Luffy murmurs, far quieter once he stops laughing and starts explaining, one arm slung around Ace’s shoulder as they walk at the back of the group headed to shore. “But he remembered, after you died. And we got your Fruit back from a bad guy, after my crew set sail again, and he’s been helping my dad rebuild some stuff since we fought that stupid secret king and broke the government. Which means Kanga and Da-chan get to grow up free, and they’ve heard all our stories about you, so now you get to be their Uncle Ace!”

Sabo is alive. Sabo is a dad. Sabo has daughters, who both inherited his eyes, who’ve grown up with bedtime stories of three boys on Dawn Island, and it’s a good thing Luffy is letting him walk at the back of the group because Ace doesn’t think he’s up for letting all the Straw Hats see him cry.

    Bookmarker's Notes

They held Whitebeard's funeral two days later. As other members of the crew choked out eulogies over the crackling of flames on the funeral barge, Marco heard a solemn voice to his right softly say:

"Beard guy, thank you for taking care of my brother. I'm sorry we never got to fight each other to be Pirate King."

It was not the most elegant speech Marco had ever heard, but the sincerity behind the sentiment from this odd boy nearly undid him. Not that there was a dry eye among them that day.

It was a difficult week for the Whitebeard pirates. After the funeral their allies left for their old haunts in the New World but under Marco the crew sailed listlessly, vaguely towards Fishman Island, but not always in a straight line. The spectre of their future choice – to choose from amongst the crew a new captain and sail in his name, or to each go their separate ways and say goodbye forever to the Whitebeard pirates – weighed on souls already heavy with grief. And Ace – bright, loyal, spunky Ace – their brother, comrade in arms, the grinning commander of Whitebeard's second division, did his work in silence, unable to even meet their eyes.

Through it all, Luffy was a spark of life and light that lifted some of the gloom that had taken hold of them. Eager to help out, always ready with a grin for those who could stand it – and it never failed that he knew just who would be comforted by a smile and who'd be broken by one – Luffy was everywhere at once, rocketing from ship to ship with messages when the Den-Den Mushi couldn't be trusted, begging food from the kitchens (on all three ships) and singing improvised verses of Bink's Sake to himself.

Most of his time, however, Luffy spent with Ace. Where none of the crew could reach the grief-stricken man, his brother could. He talked to Ace or, more often, shared his silence; somehow convinced him to eat (simply, Marco thought, by sticking food in Ace's hands and holding it there until he ate), and slept half-draped over his brother wherever Ace's narcolepsy (the only reason he slept at all) caused him to pass out. While Ace's crew was at a loss for how to comfort him (or even get him to look them in the eye dammit) Luffy breezed along, a tiny irrepressible hurricane of energy and sunshine, unperturbed by Ace's voicelessness and strangely respectful of his brother's right to a broken soul.

All this endeared him to the crew: his vitality, his helpfulness, his friendliness, the unassuming and gentle care he displayed towards Ace – but he was not one of them, an outsider apart from their grief. Until the incident with the Marines.

Three days after Whitebeard's funeral a small fleet of Marines caught up to them. Five ships, insignificant, barely even a workout. The – drained and mostly hung over – crew had started to half-heartedly prepare for battle when Luffy had leaned over the side of the crow's nest and yelled at the other ships:

"Hey! These guys are grieving, come back later!"

The answering cannon ball almost took out Whitebeard's Jolly Roger.

Seven and-a-half minutes later, a pissed-off looking Luffy had slingshotted himself back aboard the Moby Dick and the Marines – minus a ship – were running for their lives.

By the end of the week, Luffy was sharing smiles with far more of the crew, and snatches of Bink's Sake could be heard on all three ships. Laughter was muted and bittersweet but present.

    *

He'd come to Marco in the morning and requested that they stop at the first island they saw. Marco was bemused but couldn't see any reason not to, and furthermore by this point he was inclined to humour their strange guest. They spotted a tiny spit of land at lunch-time and when Marco asked Luffy if it was what he had in mind, the glutton swallowed his entire lunch in one rubbery gulp and, under the stunned eyes of the entire crew, catapulted Ace into the centre of the island.

"We'll be about half an hour," Luffy announced to the shocked deck before slingshotting himself after Ace. "Maybe forty-five minUTES-"
    *

"I have to go find my crew and then we have to go get our ship at Shabondy. Can I borrow a boat?"

"Thanks Beard-Pirate guys! Have fun in Fishman Island! And Ace! Say hi to Shanks for me if you see him before I do!"

They watched him row away far longer than necessary, that impossible little speck of sunshine, off to light another corner of the world

"He looks like he knows what he's doing," Jozu commented wistfully, "do you think he has an actual plan or does the world just rearrange itself before him?"

Ace snorted, " Oh, he has a plan: he's going to be Pirate King. The rest can figure itself out as he goes along." But there was a fond smile at the corner of his mouth and a light in his eyes they had all been missing for far too long.

[Every one piece fic author is entitled to at least one Marineford/Ace Lives AU. It's in the contract]

"To stand with us here is enter hell and declare the world your enemy." Deuce feels sweat prickle along his back from Whitebeard's Haki, even as it's not aimed at him.

Surprising everyone, the Strawhats just grin. Robin even lets out a low chuckle as she answers, "Oh, but hell was last week."

Usopp laughs, "Yeah, and declaring war on the world was the week before."

2 [writing a marineford au is all fun and games till you actually have to re-read Marineford]

Usopp fires - aiming at the place he knows Kizaru's head will snap back from Marco's swipe.

Kizaru's face doesn't dissolve into all-consuming light, his senses unconsciously registering that the incoming projectile is soft enough to not even sting.

Instead, the Hot Sauce Star pops open on his face with a splack, covering the Admiral's eyes, nose, and mouth.

    *

Luffy is there. He's right in front of them, staring down at Crocodile, "Stupid sand-croc! You can't attack the old guy, Ace really likes him!" Luffy huffs.

Nami can't help but laugh at that too.

Luffy turns at the sound and sees them. He blinks, face open and vulnerable for just one priceless second, before yelping in excitement and dragging her and Robin into a rubbery hug.

He smells absolutely disgusting. Nami hugs him back as hard as she can.

Sanji: What do you think Zoro is going to be madder about, (1) Sanji got to fight Mihawk, (2) Sanji got a Luffy hug+compliment mid-battle?

Marco: Rocketing this man towards Wano-era levels of belief in luffy, bc this is what extended Luffy+Strawhat exposure does to a person

    3

Robin egging Croc to go fight + neutralize Squard

    *

"Look, Whitebeard's got three hobbies," Deuce aggressively starts an IV, "1. Adoption, 2. Getting drunk, and 3. Ignoring medical advice."

    *

Chopper as Vivi: "I don't want anybody else to die! Mercy is a type of Justice too!"

    *

He looks at himself, a miserable tired man working for a cause he stopped believing in a long time ago. A man whose friends have all long left the Marines or died - often by their former comrades hands. A man that really wants to punch Akainu face in, tell Sengoku where to shove it, and then take a fucking nap.

    "I quit."

    4

"YOHOHOO!" Loud, raucous laughter fills the air, interrupting Sakazuki. A skeleton, "Aren't you a little young to be making judgements like that? You haven't even died once, after all!"

    *

"Brook, musician of the future Pirate King. Pleased to make your acquaintance, young man."

Whitebeard's face makes a series of rather hilarious expressions, "Old man, your captain is already, somehow, something even worse."

    *

Franky gives Kuzan a megaphone. "Those Pacifista things are Vegapunk's design, which means they'll almost certainly run on vocal command and have a hierarchy of who can give orders."

"Sengoku is going to have an aneurysm."

    5

Drowning the boat in steady waves of Conqueror's Haki, Luffy locks eyes with Whitebeard and points in Blackbeard's direction, "I don't like him." His manner is somewhere between a child's petulance and a true king's disdain.

It is not so much a statement devoid of hatred, as it is free of it. A final sentence already granted, the proclamation also somehow releases Jinbe from wasting any more of his own emotions on the condemned.

    6

Another Conqueror's Haki is never pleasant. It was named for a reason, a demand from a natural leader's will to bow, submit, kneel.

At best it was a friendly punch that held nothing back, it's not . . . Whatever that was,

The world is wide open. We can go anywhere, do anything.

    Isn't it fun?

    Isn't it fun?!

    We are absolutely, terrifyingly free.

Well, it was definitely Conqueror's Haki for all that it felt more like the brat'd been trying to make him jump from a cliff in gleeful madness rather than take a knee out of fear.

    *

Spotted Hat Guy continues in a cheerful, purposefully creepy tone, "It's fine, it probably won't even have any long-term effects on his health. His cardiovascular system is just fantastic, anyone else's arteries would have burst from the pressure he was forcing through them. Forget his heart going into arrhythmia, it should have ripped itself open. I've heard the Gum-gum Fruit listed as one of the most useless Devil Fruits, but the sheer amount of trauma it lets him put himself through is second to none."

    *

Torao snorts, " Well given that he's declared war on the World Government, punched a Celestial Dragon, and had a hand in destroying all three of the Gates of Justice all within the last month, I think the government might just prioritize the search for him."

Al still had no idea what Ed was thinking. The array was a completed circle but the inside elements were only half drawn. It looked exactly like the type of array Teacher had always told them would rebound and blow their arms off if they were lucky. Al stared at it suspiciously, trying to remind himself that Ed was a genius and ignore the slideshow of all the dumb shit Ed had ever done playing in the back of his mind.

"Truth basically gave me a power up that, in Amestris, would probably make me the most powerful Alchemist in the world. Here it’s just an aggressive lock pick.”

    *

Ed liked Garcia, he really did, and she was good at her job but she also thought partners should have no secrets and she’d told Kevin about Morgan’s stapler woes and solutions. Kevin knew that Ed and Morgan had beef and he knew Morgan and Garcia were tight, so he’d never tell Ed about it. But he did tell Al.

    Like a fool.

    *

Calm. “I think he was fucking with you,” Ed said, pretending he was Al. Al was calm. People liked how calm Al could be. It was why he was going to be a great doctor.

“George Foyet is a pervy hebephile who, after a decade, brings up that he was going to marry a fucking fetus after you reopen the investigation. He never mentioned it in any of the previous reports or in that goddamn book.” Oh no. Shit. Ed was turning more wolf than Al. Fuck fuck fuck. Breathe.

    “Agent Elric, that is enough.”

“Fuck you, Mustang,” Ed snapped. “I’m always right about these kinds of things. It’s why you have me hunt these guys down.” He was. It was why he was good at his job.

“Ed,” Hotchner said, the bite that had been in his voice a second ago entirely gone. “Who's Mustang?”

    *

"Ed just implied he’s been chasing serial killers since he was a kid.”

“I’m pretty sure he just implied that he was good at it,”

    2

“I don’t know what to do. We didn’t have a plan for me fucking up this hard.”

“Mm,” And Ed could hear the judgemental ‘maybe you didn’t’ barely hidden in Al’s voice. “Orginized crime.”

Ed snorted. “Like the fucking mob?”

“Mustang is not a mob boss,” Al countered. “He was just your handler and you worked with him to keep me safe. You never hurt anyone yourself and you don’t have any names. They just gave you files and photos for you to figure out who was taking out gang members.”

    “Jesus Christ."

“You aren’t Christian,” Al said with a tut.

“It’s still a good curse,” Ed countered. “It rolls off the tongue.”

“Or you could go with Jason’s theory.”

“Dammit, we’re going to have to go with the military cult. It needs a name and a back story and a place to put it.”

There was a moment of silence and Ed could feel the judgement pouring off of his brother even a hundred miles away. “The cult is called Amestris,” the ‘you moron’ was unsaid but deeply implied. “We don’t know where because we didn’t see a map for the first time until we escaped, and it’s been long enough that you don’t remember much besides Mustang being a bastard who used you to profile insurgents."

“It would make sense for me to not rat out the guy who did his best to help us escape.”

    *

If Ed ran hot his brother ran cold.

“We’re in the middle of a very dangerous case and I need them focused so no one else gets hurt.”

He expected Alphonse to hang up on him. Instead they lingered in silence. Finally Alphonse let out a bark of bitter laughter. “No wonder he called you Mustang.”

    *

He crouched in front of George, his eyes still kind. “My brother traded everything so I could be safe. This is the least I can do in return.”

He jammed the needle into the side of George’s chest, fully depressing the syringe, before he punched him in the chest. Then the man started screaming. “Help! I need security! A man just attacked me.”

[yes, a needle of air to the chest WILL kill you]

    3

“A doctor in training defends his brother, the comatose FBI agent, from a prolific serial killer?” She shook her head. “If Al was arrested the police would be crucified by the media."

    *

“You and I both know a kid can feel comfortable enough to yell at a guardian and still be in an abusive situation. Focus on how not to be a Mustang. It seems like not lying to Ed is probably the easiest way to avoid triggering that landmine.”

    *

“Do I need to quit my job?” Christ, Ed was the one with the gun and Al was the one killing serial killers. That was so fucked up.

“No.” Al’s voice was serious, the lightness of his smile replaced by the face of someone who had seen Truth and lived to tell the tale. “You’re stopping Barrys and Kimbleys and Tuckers. You’re saving Ninas and Rockbells."

    *

Al smiled and Ed trusted Al, so he leaned forward and listened when Al taught Ed the theories that Ed had taught Al.

Luffy didn’t know much about marriage. Sure, there had been some married couples he knew growing up, like some of Dadan’s bandits, who Makino had explained were married after Luffy had asked why they would press their lips together like that.

So he knew the basics – he knew married couples kissed, he knew they protected each other like they were nakama, and they vowed to stay together. He was pretty sure they were meant to live together. Other than that, he didn’t know much about marriage.

What he did know, with Torao’s heart beating in his chest and the phantom sensation of their pressed together lips, was that he and Torao had for sure gotten married before their crews had parted ways.

“Thinking?” Nami echoed. “What’s important enough that got you to forget about the food right in front of your face?”

Luffy slumped forward, leaning his face in the palm of his hands and letting his mouth fall into a pout. He was glad Nami asked, though. His crewmates were so smart, they were sure to know how a marriage between pirates was meant to work.

“I was thinking about marriage,” Luffy said, and the eyes of his crewmates, who had begun to relax, snapped back on him.

“Marriage?” Usopp questioned. “What are you thinking about marriage for?”

“What exactly were you thinking about marriage, Captain?” Robin asked, her eyes curious.

“How does it work?” Luffy asked, and the crew seemed to let out a collective breath.

    *

“Di-what?” Luffy cocked his head to the side, turning back to Robin for an explanation.

“When people don’t want to be married anymore, they get divorced. It legally ends the marriage, and allows them to marry other people if they so choose.”

“Eh? End the marriage? Marry other people? I thought people who got married wanted to stay together for the rest of their lives?” What would be the point otherwise? Did this mean Torao would still be able to go out and marry whoever he wanted?

“They do when they get married,” Nami said impatiently, sounding done with the conversation. “But people change their minds.”

“That’s dumb. I’m not going to change my mind,” Luffy said determinedly. And Torao wasn’t allowed to change his mind either – Luffy would just keep his heart until he changed it back.

“I’m sure you wouldn’t, Captain,” Chopper piped up, “but you don’t need to worry about that until you’ve found someone you want to marry.”

“Oh,” Luffy said, realising he’d kept something vital from his crew, “but I already married Torao.”

Silence followed the statement for one moment, two, then-

    “Ehhhhh?!”

“What do you mean you married Law?”

“When did you have time to-”

“Who even officiated? Isn’t the first mate meant to-”

“I swear, Marimo, if you married Luffy and Law without telling us-”

“Shit cook, as if I’d do that – not that it would be any of your damn business if I did-”

“Shishishi!” Luffy laughed over the sounds of his stunned crewmates. “Silly Sanji, we didn’t need anyone to o-fish-ate-”

    “Officiate,” someone muttered.

“Torao gave me his heart, then I gave him mine,” Luffy pounded a hand over his chest twice for emphasis, “then Torao kissed me! So we’re married.”

“Did Torao say you were married?” Robin asked, and Luffy frowned at the question. Torao didn’t need to say they were married. The hearts spoke for themselves.

“We got married,” Luffy just insisted stubbornly, “but now it’s been weeks and we haven’t spoken. That’s why I need you guys’ help with the marriage stuff. Now I need to make sure I’m a good husband, or Torao will want to di-horse me.”

The crews’ eyes flicked to one another hesitantly.

“Ok Luffy,” Nami spoke up. “Robin can teach you about marriage after dinner. The rest of us have other matters to attend to.”

    *

There was no reason for them to be stopping at a nearby island.

    “Supplies,” Penguin had told him,

“A treasure chest!” Shachi had blurted out,

“I’m sorry!” Bepo had repeated, but managed not to explain what, exactly, he was sorry for.

Once they docked, however, it was as clear as the Thousand Sunny’s blazing figurehead.

“What a coincidence,” Ikkaku said with a shit-eating grin.

    *

“I’m going to explain this, and you are going to listen, alright?” Law asked, waiting for Luffy’s jerking nod. “Right now, we already have a target on our back just from our alliance alone. If you go around telling people we’re married, that’s going to make everything a thousand times more difficult. Do you understand?”

For some reason, Law’s grim words made Luffy brighten considerably. “I understand,” Luffy confirmed, and Law let out a sigh of relief. “Torao wants to be married to me, but we can’t until after I become King of the Pirates!”

For a moment, all law could do was stare, gobsmacked. “How… how the hell do you come away with that?” he snapped at a laughing Luffy.

“We can’t get married now for stupid reasons, but that won’t matter once I’m the Pirate King, so we’ll do it then.”

“That’s…” more than Law was expecting, actually. “You know what, fine. When you become the Pirate King, we can get married.”

In a second, Law had a lapful of an excitable Luffy, and he found himself smiling despite himself.

“Sanji!” He bellowed as he did. “Get the food ready! Torao said he’ll marry me when I’m Pirate King!”

Cheers rang out across the deck.

Luffy and Law swap hearts before leaving Wano because that is a perfectly reasonable way to handle your crush sailing into the opposite horizon in the morning. “Give me your heart,” Luffy said.

Luffy knew exactly what Law could do. There wasn’t a second where he misunderstood that request as anything less than literal.

Luffy was a madman, Law remembered, the kind who’d punch a celestial dragon or ask which emperor you wanted to take on first. And of course, Luffy was not his ally. Not after tomorrow. It would be so easy for him to kill Law here having achieved everything they’d set out together to do and to leave without any loss on his part.

Yet here he was, asking so nicely, Law thought. How kind.

A hell of a move, honestly. They knew more about each other and their respective crews than anyone else on the seas. They were a threat to one another, plain and simple. The perfect opportunity for anyone who held a grudge to propose a sabotage of the other, and neither had any shortage of enemies.

Not that it was Luffy’s kind of tactic, sabotage. Any proposal of the sort was unlikely to interest him, which was good news for Law. Although, anyone who’d ever read a newspaper would happily pin that kind of technique on Law instead. So for Luffy to ask this was monstrous in its own right but also kind of incredible.

What he should have done was refuse him outright.

So of course, what Law actually said was, “That’s a hell of a collateral, Straw Hat.” Like he might, in some world, consider it. Law should have thrown him off and gotten out of danger and finally ended this stupid game they’d been playing together. Instead he sneered, and said, “What could you possibly offer me that would be worth it? You could kill me any time with a thing like that.”

And Luffy smiled like this was easy, like he’d thought about it and had something so valuable up his sleeve that he truly believed Law would agree to this.

    “Take mine,” he said.

    Law’s breath caught.

“Because tomorrow we’re leaving, and we won’t be allies anymore.” Luffy looked up and met Law’s gaze through half-lidded eyes and it was the look of someone who knew exactly what kind of power he held in his frame. “Torao has been very clear. Our alliance ends and we become rivals.”

Law decided that he might not mind if Luffy tore him apart with his bare hands, as long as he looked at him like that while he did it, which was mildly embarrassing to come to terms with but not totally unexpected.

“If we had each other’s hearts, we’d be a hell of a lot more than allies, Straw Hat.”

    “Mm. Exactly.”

“This was never part of our agreement.”

“That’s why we’re negotiating. Torao likes negotiating, right?” Had Luffy always looked at him like that? Or had Law finally taken too many knocks to the head?

“It makes no sense,” Law rasped.

    “No?”

“That’s a crazy way to ensure loyalty, it’s just risking death. If I die, you might just drop dead. Even if you didn’t, you would be stuck without your heart. No one else can put it back for you.”

    “Is Torao planning on dying?”

    “Am I… No.”

    “Good.”

Luffy hummed, drumming his fingers over Law’s chest lightly in some beat he didn’t recognise. “Torao does all of his talking through his heart.”

“Oh really,” Law scoffed. “And what does my heart say?”

    “Steal me.”

    Law was insane.

    He was.

    Luffy was insane.

Truly, properly, way more than Law. Surely.

    “You’re crazy,” he breathed.

And Luffy smiled at him slyly, because he’d very clearly felt under his fingers how Law’s traitorous little heart had leapt to be nearer to him. “Does Torao want my heart?”

The idiot just watched him, didn’t even bother taking his gaze away from Law’s face to look at his own heart beating unnaturally out of his chest. Crazy fuck.

But Law never valued his own sanity very highly anyway. So he reached his other hand to his own chest, tangled his fingers into Luffy’s and whispered once again. Then he pulled his heart out of the space between his ribs and into Luffy’s grasp.

And yeah. Why would he look his own heart? He had no need for a thing like that after this.

Luffy just leaned in close, hands braced either side of Law’s head all joy and wonder and sparkling effervescence. “Law’s heart is so loud,” he said. “I can hear how happy he is.”

Fucking hell. He’d gone and given Luffy a cheat sheet to his thoughts.

If they’d only done the sensible thing and finished off this alliance by having sex, Law thought hysterically, there was little chance of it being even half as intimate as this train wreck.

“If you don’t kiss me,” he said, even while his head was still spinning, “I’m taking my heart back and you’re never seeing me again.”

Luffy grinned like Law wasn’t a person who made terrible threats and kept them. Then he leaned in, the weight of his torso held just above him like a promise, and whispered, “Liar.”

    And then Luffy kissed him.

“A child?” Arashi straightened from his slouch. “Like, my age?”

    The maid, acquiesced, surprised.

    “Precisely.”

“Well, why didn’t you say so earlier? I have friends from more modest neighbourhoods, maybe that’s why.”

    “Young Master, you are mistaken…”

But Arashi was already taking wide strides to the main entrance. He opened the door wide and looked in the direction of the portal.

“Hey,” he called out, “if you’re here to see me don’t just stand there and ring- wait.”

He squinted in the darkness. The figure with dark clothes was sitting under the street light. They turned when Arashi opened the door and yelled, looking surprised. The black and blue face that watched back was all too familiar to Arashi, who took a second to recognise his friend.

    “Maki?! Is that you?”

“Young master, do you happen to know this person?”

But Arashi did not pay attention to the servants’ words anymore. He left the house’s doorstep - still in socks - so as to crouch next to Maki.

“Hey… hey!” he passed a hand in front of the other boy’s eyes, and was all too concerned to realise that Maki was quite dazed. “Maki, it’s me, Arashi, the great Ouji Arashi. What happened to you? Should I call a hospital?”

Maki flinched when Arashi’s hand landed on his shoulder, and he seemed to focus once more on the present moment. His gaze finally found Arashi’s, lost and confused. Arashi refrained from shaking his friend by the shoulders, instead waiting more or less patiently for anything that might count as an answer.

    “Hospital… no I… I don’t have the money… why… Why are you- here?”

Arashi blinked, but pushed back his first confused response, focusing on Maki.

“You’re in front of my house.”

Maki’s eyes slowly flitted from Arashi to the manor behind them. Then, the thought seemed to click, and he let out:

    “Oh.”

    Then.

    “Sorry.”

There was a plethora of replies Arashi immediately had to stop himself from delivering off the top of his head. Like, why was Maki apologizing, or that he was an idiot, or maybe just ‘who the fuck did this to you?’. Instead, he stood up and inspected Maki with a stern, grave expression. Then, he called the maid that had accompanied him to the doorstep over to them.

“Carry him inside, gently,” he instructed them, then to another one watching from the main corridor, “call the family doctor. Be quick.”

Anyone who played a sport knew about accidents, and they knew that concussions were dangerous if left untreated. Arashi took immediate measures, taking advantage of his parents’ absence to do as he wished. Once Maki was safely carried inside despite his unconvinced protests that he could walk, the portal closed, the door did too, and it was as though no boy had ever stayed crouched under the streetlight of the manor’s entrance.

Everything was clean, prim and proper, as it should be. Looking at the drawn curtains, no one had any reason to think otherwise.

    That was how it started.

He talked frankly, and yet there was something sneaky about him.

    *

"Heh,” Touma smiled behind the cap of the bottle. “I imagine Maki had no reaction. He likes everything.”

    *

Maki WAS a genius. But it was effort that had gotten him to where he was now. Not talent. Effort.

    Compensation.

Itsuki knew the feeling. Even if he did not know what Maki’s barrier was made of.

He let go of the lizard.

    Bookmarker's Notes

[I'm only caught up on the anime rn but the fact that it would've been so EASY to rescue Sho at the end of S1 will never stop making me irritated. Ah well, fanfic exists for a reason, right?]

    *

It’s been no more than three months. Sho has, more or less, found himself a spot scooped out just for him amongst the 8th Fire Force Company. It’s not been easy, and sharing a room with both his brother and a stupid Not-Knight makes him almost yearn for the silence and privacy of his old quarters. That being said, knowing that there are heartbeats nearby that he knows (loves), is more comforting than he will ever admit, up to and including the threat of death.

If Sho’s being nice he’ll call Company 8 a “lively bunch”. If he’s being honest, he’ll call them “chaotic and unfit for polite society”. Shinra grabbing him by the back of his shirt like a kitten and hauling him out of there puts him more in the mood to be honest. He doesn’t really have a chance to be until Shinra slows them down, all the way to the doorway of their shared room. Sho is set down gently, but the sheepish grin Shinra throws at him lets him know his big brother knows he’s not happy about it.

“Ah, sorry Sho, I know you don’t like being carried,” Shinra says. “I just know you hate being covered in food more, so I figured this was the lesser of two evils.” Sho’s never told him that, but he’s right. Sho hates being sticky and the sensation of things caught in his hair with a burning passion. Being carried is, perhaps, a small price to pay for escaping clean.

Sho sniffs a, “whatever,” but shoves the platter of chicken wings into Shinra’s hands anyways, “I’ll share these as payment.”

“Oh wow, you held onto them? I thought you would’ve left them behind as ammo for the others.”

“I wouldn’t waste Hinawa’s chicken wings for such a lowly cause.” Sho snatches a wing off the platter, “besides, I saved them so I get to pick who I share them with.”

    *

    “What’s on your mind?”

Ah, Sho thinks, he’s learned this too. Sho hates, even more than being carried or sticky or having things in his hair, being asked ‘are you okay?’ Because the answer is usually ‘no and I don’t know if I’ll ever know what okay looks like’ but what always comes out is ‘I’m fine’ like a lying liar who lies. Sho doesn’t lie, never did it with the Evangelist or his subordinates but at the 8th Company it seems like the most frequent one he tells. Shinra, though, Shinra knows, doesn’t he?

“why do you all play games? Just… playing, all the time. Sometimes it’s not even a game with rules or a reason that you start. One moment someone is having a regular conversation, the next someone is playing a game, like you and Arthur always do.”

    “Now that’s not-”

“And with Maki!” Now that Sho has a grasp of at least the thoughts around his question, he can’t stop himself from trying to explain it to Shinra (to himself), “You don’t mind when she gets mad at you for pointing out her strength, even encourage it sometimes! And with Tamaki, dodging her when she gets weird with a jacket at the ready, or Sister Iris when she needs help reaching something but Vulcan keeps it away from her without being mean about it. And when shopping for clothes for the Lieutenant and when the Captain used some of us as weights when we all know he could lift all of us without breaking a sweat! The company is always playing with each other, but there’s no goal to it all. You’re not training your speed, or your strength, your dexterity isn’t challenged. What’s the point of it all if there’s no training behind it?”

Sho is watching his brother’s face slowly morph into one of comprehension and horror . By the end, when Sho is just waiting for his answer, Shinra has his hands clenched in front of his mouth, eyes enormous and unmoving from Sho’s own. It’s unnerving, like some horrible bomb is about to be dropped and Sho doesn’t know what set it off.

“Sho,” Shinra whispers, choked and trembling in his seat. “Sho, when we play like that with each other, there’s no- no reason behind it. We do it because we care about each other. When - sometimes friends, family , play and tease each other because-” Shinra is shivering, his hands white knuckled against each other. His eyes are bright and shiny in the worst way possible and Sho is regretting ever asking, now. “I don’t really know why, to be honest. But we here at the 8th use it to show how much we care about each other, because no one else is allowed to do it except friends and,” Shinra swallows, “and family. It’s a privilege, I guess. We use it to bond. Does that- does that explain anything?”

“No,” Sho says, hushed and wary, “I don’t understand.”

Shinra’s mouth is twisted and ugly, eyes shiny and bright, but there are no tears.

    “That’s okay,” Shinra croaks.

"I didn't mean to disturb you, Dokja-ssi. I didn't know you could look so cute when sleeping."

Dokja smirks good-naturedly. "As cute as a sleep-deprived salaryman can be." He comments.

    *

'Your total is 11,532.32 won, but this stuff is trash. I was going to throw it out after my shift. You don't have to pay for it.'

"It's fine, I don't mind paying for it. I don't want you to get in trouble just because you want to help me."

The teen rips his phone away, frantically typing once again on his notes app. 'I won't get in trouble, you can take it.'

"If you won't get in trouble, why are you typing on a screen? Do you not want people to hear the conversation?"

Pulling the phone back, the teen pauses before typing another message. It's much slower than before. 'I get nervous speaking, typing is easier for me. Sorry about that.'

    *

The boy stares at him, unblinking. He would have assumed he was a life-like doll if not for the shivers raking through him. To the side, he notices a pool of blood to the side. It's not a lot, but no less alarming nonetheless.

The salaryman reaches into his bag to pull out two kim-bap's. Dokja holds them up and slowly lowers them to the side of the boy while crouching.

"I live in the beige apartment with a weird grey thing on top. Kyungshu-jib. Room 73. It's on the third floor. If you need to be patched up or anything, I can help you. Or if you need something to eat or whatever." Dokja turns back, voice quieter. "I won't call anyone, if you don't want to. Just ring if you need me."

With that, he treks on beyond the desolate park. There's no following footsteps or call after him, Dokja worries, but doesn't want to force the kid to do anything. He hopes that he was just lost for the night, and that his parents would be looking for him soon. But with those brown eyes that look oh-so familiar, his heart knew better.

    2

Flashes of a dingy, grey apartment flooded Dokja's mind.

Another breeze reminds him that he's 26. Not 6 anymore. It's been ages since he's been there, no matter how recognizable the child appears to him.

    *

His eyes now fixated on Dokja's body rather than his face. Like he was waiting for his next move. Like he was bracing his body for something. So Dokja moved with extreme slowness that could rival a snail.

    *

"I have to go to Game Development quite frequently, y'know? Our departments are like fraternal twins. Somehow, almost every person there knew your name and sang your praises for helping them so much."

"It's only to help speed things along."

"Then, Logistics and R&D have spoken kindly of you. Despite rarely seeing your face. You're like the boogie man of some sort; Coming in to respond to their BCC."

    This surprised Dokja.

"So, Dokja-ssi. I won't force you or anything. But I would really appreciate it if you agreed to be my partner for the current merger."

    *

Cigarette marks peppered across his shoulder blades.

Dokja wants to gag, he really does. He's never had to look at things like this on someone else before. Did I look like this, once?

    *

The boy sobs, he wails like a banshee. Not because it hurts, he's used to hurting. That's all he knows.

He's sobbing because his hands are so gentle. The boy doesn't know what to do with gentleness.

    4

"You're the president, aren't you? Your coworkers were just covering your ass."

Too shocked to scoff at the outrageous claim. "No, I'm an assistant, you bastard. Now let me go!"

    5

Could Dokja lie to him, even? He doubted it. The look in Gilyoung's eyes were not ones of curiosity, the were ones of knowing.

    6 🪲

Gilyoung was not meant to stand beside them. Would you want an insect photo-bombing your picturesque family photo?

He imagined instead of the butt of a cigar, he was getting stung by a bee, perhaps hoping to pollinate him.

Around his body lied remnants of ash. His aunt tsked, saying he couldn't even make a good ashtray.

Gilyoung wished to leave this world. Not the one where lady beetles and centipedes crawled across him, but the one where he was seen as nothing but a disturbance. He wanted to be a part of the ecosystem of living beings that didn't disrupt one another. He wanted to be an ant within a colony.

“That brat of yours,” Whitebeard said, “He is going against Kaidou, isn’t he?”
Somewhere nearby, one of the commanders made a sound that reminded Marco of a dying fish.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Ace’s little brother had beaten them to the punch and stopped the war before it had started. The brat had, somehow, freed Ace from Impel Down just in time. A miracle, if Marco had ever seen any. Not that they should have been surprised; that kid had taken down Crocodile and probably Moria and had destroyed Enies Lobby, and he had punched a Celestial Dragon straight in the face. Him razing Impel Down? Honestly, someone should have expected it.

But while the kid’s butting in and stopping the war had been a relief, it had also been the reason for one of the biggest clashes between Red Hair and Pops. Because no good deed goes unpunished -- the kid had his chest melted by Akainu for his troubles while trying to get Ace back to the Whitebeards.

The whole ordeal turned Ace into a wreck, more so than his own impending death ever could have, (that was his little brother on the operating table), but he wasn’t the only one. Emporio Ivankov, Jimbei himself, and Boa Hancock, the man hating pirate empress, were all worried out of their damn minds. Rayleigh appeared, showed obvious concern, waited for Straw Hat to get better, then whisked him away to train him personally. At that point, Marco was sure this kid would make them regret their existence once he became ready to storm the New World as well.

Then Straw Hat Luffy turned out to be Red Hair’s adopted son slash protégé slash bet for the new era. The kid he had given Roger’s hat to and his arm for. Shanks picked a fight with Pops, because ‘my son almost died for you son when it could have been avoided.’

    *

“I know, I know. I’m sorry, I heard Luffy was going against Kaidou and I sort of panicked and the next thing I know I’m here.”

    “Son.”

“Aaaanyway, so Big Mom is here. And I think she in an alliance with Kaidou.”

The sake cup in Shanks’ hand shattered. Again.

At least this time it was empty.

Then the sake cup in Pops’ hand followed right after.

    *

Edward felt… oddly proud. He had known the kid since he was a baby on Roger’s ship, and now, he had grown into a man worthy of sitting side by side with Edward, worrying about a son of his own.

A son that was every bit as wild and free and reckless as Red Hair was. As Roger had been.

    Or maybe more.

Red Hair sure could pick them.

    *

The paper stagnated for a while, and Benn knew that if he hadn’t already been gray, he would be now. Then, the paper started gaining in size… and it kept growing. And growing. Benn was completely speechless as he watched it grow back to more than half its original size, as if nothing had happened.

“The brat must have been fed,” Whitebeard mused, “Marco had mentioned his recovery was weird like that.” He laughed, though it wasn’t very forceful. “Ace called it one of Straw Hat’s miraculous mysteries.”

    *

“The orders had changed.” The Den Den said, “The Five Elders have issued an edict. Listen closely. Eliminate Straw Hat Luffy AT ONCE.”

Benn barely registered the haki emanating from Shanks.

The answer from the CP0 agent sounded just as outraged. “What do you mean?! Straw Hat is fighting Kaidou right now! You want me to interfere with that battle?! That’s impossible!”

“They know full well it’s impossible. This is meant to prevent a worst-case scenario. His devil fruit must not awaken.”

Benn’s captain grabbed the other snail and dialed, without so much as glancing at Whitebeard. “This is Red Haired Shanks, captain of the Red Hair pirates, Emperor of the sea. If you interfere, I will destroy all of your ships, do you hear me?! And not just them! I will murder each and every one of the marines I come across from here on out! This is a declaration of War!”

    The answer did not wait.

“We were told you would say that. And we understand. See you in hell, Red Hair.”

In that very moment, Monkey D. Luffy’s vivre card burnt up and disappeared.

Shanks stared at where the vivre card had been.

Luffy had been murdered. Anchor was… gone.

    *

Strong, bright, cheerful, and most definitely Luffy, but at the same time… not. It expanded for a moment, then snapped back, away, just as the drumbeat quieted. As if it was some kind of explosion of voice, a shout screaming I AM NOT DEAD YET!!!

They felt it the moment it happened – the world seemed to shake, and the heavens split, and there was a scream that echoed through the clouds, through the storm, carried by the wind.

“I will make a world WHERE MY FRIENDS… CAN EAT… AS MUCH AS THEY WANT!”

Shanks put hand on his face and laughed. And laughed as he felt the whole island shake, laughed as he saw the storm clouds clear against the dawn.

    “Luffy… never change.”
