A man-eating merman killed all of William’s crewmates. Leaving him, the lone survivor. When he too is finally caught. William is not killed or eaten. Instead, the merman kisses him. Gently like a reunited lover.
William has no memories of his past life as a merman or of being Mark’s mate. So, he is extremely confused and terrified when he is kidnapped. Then held captive by an overwhelmingly affectionate monster.

The story draws heavy inspiration from Anakin Skywalker's infamous love confession to Padmé in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, particularly in Mark’s obsessive, grief-stricken declarations of love. Debbie knew that her son was not like others when the silence followed him. Mark Grayson didn't understand the world, he didn't understand the feelings within him that lurked since birth, and he didn't understand William Clockwell. Even when he would be the quiet kid, when he would utilise his powers for things that would make people feel revulsion if they ever found out, he realised more and more how he needed William when he grew older.
It was true that the world didn't make sense, but William helped him to understand. That was all that Mark needed, and the rest of the world could burn.

Summary
Season 2 Thraxa AU.
Mark has a lot of time to think about his life and his heritage when Cecil was testing his loyalty after Chicago. After his best friend Willam encourages him to help an alien race, Mark decides to try and be the hero he thought his father was.
Mark shouldn’t have been surprised that William insisted on coming to an alien planet, or that his friend excelled at getting along with people, even if they were an entirely different race.
When the Viltrumites come to Thraxa looking for the soldier who abandoned his post, they are all too eager to test Nolan’s son, and end the life of the infant.
Or: Mark and William learn about Thraxa, themselves, and what it means to try and defend people.
