Summary
The problem was, Buck didn’t have a middle gear, truly. He was either all in or all out. And right now, he was spiralling quietly, performing instead of being, afraid that one more slip would confirm what Bobby (and everyone else) seemed to believe – that Buck was too impulsive, too much, too wrong for this place.
So he shut up. Did his job. Laughed when the others laughed. Kept his head down.
And it worked. Kind of.

Summary
“Seriously, the second I get back, you’re the one running off?” Eddie asks as he steps up to Buck. Their shoulders bumps together and Buck does his best not to flinch, from the words or the sudden contact. He’s unused to having Eddie around. The months of distance seems to have overwritten the years of familiarity. “You couldn’t have given me a settling in period?”
Buck should joke back. That’s what he does, matched Eddie, because the two of them have been in sync for years. He can’t though, because Buck has been knocked off the track, spiraling out of Eddie’s gravitational pull, and he’s not sure how to get back on. If he even wants to get back on.
Buck transfers out of the 118, gets a new apartment, and tries to pretend he isn't in love with his best friend.

Summary
“I just—I don’t want you to be alone,” said Eddie, softly, like an admission.
Join the fucking club, Buck thought. It was funny, but none of his laughs were coming out right tonight. “I am alone, Eddie.”
“Buck, I—”
“She wants my kidney.” There it went; Buck never could keep anything inside. Could never keep the feelings contained, could never stop them from spilling out over the people nearest him. “That’s what fucking happened, okay? My dad needs a kidney donor and they remembered why they bothered having me in the first place. Is that what you wanted to hear? That my parents finally found a use for me after all these years?”
-----
A request from his mom tears open old wounds for Buck. From 800 miles away, Eddie tries to stitch him back together.

Summary
Buck can feel the sob Eddie tries to hold back - can hear the whimper that manages to slip past his lips. It tears something open inside of Buck, and it feels like whatever is left of his heart starts leaking into the space between their bodies and staining their chests crimson.
“Tell me you love me,” Eddie begs.
“I love you,” Buck promises.
And he just wishes that it could be enough.

Summary
It’s not Buck’s fault that he hasn’t stopped running since the day he ran from Hershey and never went back.
It’s not Buck’s fault that the only way Eddie knows how to handle the overwhelming-ness of his stupidly loving heart is to treat Buck like he treats Christopher - as someone to provide for, to look after, to dote on.
It’s not Buck’s fault that the lightning hit him, and it’s not his fault that he died for three minutes and seventeen seconds, and it’s not his fault that when he first wakes up, he looks at Eddie like Eddie is a ghost and Buck will never be able to touch him again.
Which he doesn’t, anyway. Touch him, that is. Not like he used to.
OR
Buck is doing just fine after getting hit by lightning until he's not. Eddie's there to help pick up all of the pieces, except they have sharp edges and all they do is hurt.

Summary
They’d just been playing Monopoly for fuck’s sake. They’d eaten pizza. It had been a totally normal time. Sure, maybe Eddie was mad at Buck and sure maybe Buck was mad right back at Eddie, but they’d stowed it away for Christopher, and it had been fine. Buck shouldn’t have ruined it by being weird and traumatised. Having a bad childhood is meant to make him funny, not fragile.
Bobby lets out a breath and shifts in his seat, watching him with sad eyes. From out by the TV, Buck can hear Athena move around on the couch. “Triggers don’t have to be obvious,” Bobby says steadily. “Your past isn’t something you can defeat once and move on.”
Well, Bobby would be the one to know, wouldn’t he?
Buck clenches his jaw and grinds his teeth. There’s too much in him, all at once. Guilt exhaustion, fear, frustration. “I thought I was past it,” he muttered. “I’ve been doing the work.”
Bobby leans back in the seat, studying him. “You are,” he says, matter-of-fact. “This is the work.”
That’s so not cool, actually.
OR
Buck and Eddie have a fight. This causes a whole bunch of problems for literally everybody involved and somehow ends up in a love confession.

It’s something that Doctor Copeland says in a session, actually, that kind of trips him up.

Buck realises just how much of an impact he's had on Eddie's mental health in the past and resolves to do better. Resolves to try harder. It's not until everything else starts falling apart that he realises he might have overcorrected.

He knows it.
What starts out as courtroom rivals dissolves into passions behind closed doors, and then evolves into something neither of them expected.Bookmarked by TheDragon

Summary
Buck tries to commit the frame to memory, wills himself not to forget the important details—Eddie on his knees in front of him, his nails seeking purchase along Buck's thighs as he drinks him down, his drawn-out gasps when Buck returns the favor.
After, when Buck reaches out for quiet confirmation in the dark, asks him, "Good?"
Eddie tells him, earnest and hard-won, "Everything is good with you," and Buck can bask in the illusion of a world where he almost believes it.
Buck is trying to leave the past where it belongs. Then he wins an all-expenses-paid trip to Italy, convinces Eddie to join him, and falls headfirst into (not so) casual sex with his best friend.

“You never– I didn’t know that, Buck! I didn’t know you loved me!”
“What do you mean?” Buck demands, finally ungluing himself from the ground to step forward. “You had to have known!”
“If I had known that you loved me the way I loved you then I wouldn’t have let you walk away!” Eddie shouts, clawing at the stained fabric of his shirt.
“I thought you knew!”

Summary
“I just…I miss kissing.”
And Eddie knows he shouldn’t say it, shouldn’t even be thinking it, but when Buck’s sitting like that, looking unfairly good in a white shirt that stretches over his shoulders and leaves little to imagination, he can’t stop himself from wanting it more than he’s ever wanted something before.
“You should kiss me,” he says, because he’s stupid with want, but when Buck’s gaze flickers to his lips, he knows he’s screwed if Buck kisses him.
[A few months after breaking up with Natalia, Buck mentions he misses kissing during the annual Grant-Nash Christmas party. Eddie, of course, offers to kiss him, and things spiral from there.]

Summary
Eddie tilts his head, his hand sliding off Buck’s knee as he leans back. Buck misses the warmth immediately. “Would that help you—having rules?”
Buck can only nod in response, equally confused and intrigued by the sudden gleam in Eddie’s eyes.
Eddie reaches for his beer bottle and brings it to his mouth, tapping the rim against his lower lip. “So if I came up with some dating rules for you to follow, you’d be all right with that?”Buck decides to start dating again, and Eddie offers to give him some rules to follow. That's just the kind of great best friend he is. It's a completely platonic arrangement, and Eddie definitely doesn't have any ulterior motives.

Summary
Eddie moves before Buck can blink—one smooth, unhesitating motion. His hands find Buck’s waist first, then slide lower, bracing under his thighs as he lifts. The world tilts, and for a second Buck feels weightless, the heat of Eddie’s palms searing through denim, the strength behind it dizzying against Buck’s already crumbling composure.
Then the counter meets him—cool beneath his thighs even through the fabric—Eddie’s hands leaving heat in their wake like a brand. Eddie’s still standing close enough that Buck’s knees frame him, not backing away immediately. His breath grazes Buck’s chest, eyes flicking up, the space between them charged with something that makes every cell in Buck’s body scream more, more, more.
“Now sit,” Eddie says firmly, hands still resting under Buck’s legs before he finally backs away. “Stay.”

“Uh…” Buck cocked his head. His blue eyes flicked to Eddie before falling back to the others. “Yeah. I meet Eddie for drinks sometimes after his shift.”
As if Eddie had ever let him have a drink that didn’t come out of his own glass when he was feeling generous. But Eddie wasn’t about to tell their team that most of those meet ups involved Buck on his knees for him either.
