Summary
Her breath is heavy, and she tries to shake herself awake, but every time she tries to blink away the sleep in her eyes, she’s pulled right back into a very appealing set of images of Greta from the dream she had just prior to waking up.
Carson can’t help but huff out a laugh, knowing her subconscious and her body miss Greta as much as her heart does.
Greta headed out on a business trip four days ago, another corporate conference, this time in London, that Vivienne invited her to, which is just a nice way of saying that Greta was required to make the trip. From time to time, Carson will go with her, but it’s finals week at the high school she teaches at and softball season is just about to start. As much as Carson wants to be spoiled to the max on the Hughes company dime and take advantage of the king-sized bed, large-scale penthouse, and gigantic bathtub that Greta is always provided as senior vice president, Carson had to decline.
(Or, Carson misses Greta. She calls her so they can do something about it.)

“She’s not my girlfriend,” Greta hisses, even as she watches the game, watches Carson leading off second base, the focus in her jawline, the flex of her calves, that stupid cap on her head.
“Oh really?” Maybelle leans over Jess. “Then why are you drooling?”
Greta’s face goes hot. “I’m not fucking drooling!” she hisses. “Carson and I work together.”
“Yeah, I’m sure you do lots of things together,” Jess quips, proud of themself.
Swallowing hard, Greta steels her resolve. They’re getting too close to the truth. She has to remember the rules she and Carson drew up in the back of class once – they should have been taking notes, but Carson’s hand was on her knee, her thumb drawing circles, so she spent most of class just doing her best to keep a clear head.
“Really, Carson and I are just friends,” she says, firm. “She has a boyfriend.” And that part is true at least. Carson isn’t her girlfriend; that’s Greta’s entire problem.
(Or, a modern-take on the affair and how it might play out if they were allowed more choices, for better or for worse. The one where they're in college, they're co-workers, they can't keep their hands off each other + they just really need to get their shit together.)

But Carson, maybe – Carson, with her gentle hands and soft eyes and the way she always takes care of Greta, her kindness, her love. Carson, maybe, will understand – or if not, she won’t laugh.
