Music revealed what ordinary words couldn't. It was the representation of someone's very soul: raw, unfiltered unapologetic. It was something real. The walls were caving in around him.
He heard talking but he couldn't hear or see who it was -- his hearing was numb and he couldn't even look up from where he'd closed in on himself against the wall, his knees pressed harshly against his eyes.
He heard a loud crash and he had to stop himself from whimpering. He didn't want to get hit again, did he?
No.
No, that wasn't right.
He wasn't a child anymore. He wasn't at his parents' house anymore. He wasn't getting hurt by them anymore.
He was safe.
But he remembered.
