David couldn't breathe.
The walls were caving in around him.
He heard talking but he couldn't hear or see who it was -- his hearing was numb and he couldn't even look up from where he'd closed in on himself against the wall, his knees pressed harshly against his eyes.
He heard a loud crash and he had to stop himself from whimpering. He didn't want to get hit again, did he?
No.
No, that wasn't right.
He wasn't a child anymore. He wasn't at his parents' house anymore. He wasn't getting hurt by them anymore.
He was safe.
But he remembered.

The Spine knew he was strange -- how could he not? He was a robot, after all. Robots weren't typically a normal part of human life. That didn't mean he was okay with that strangeness though. He wanted to accept it and move on -- or better yet just be normal. But it wasn't that easy.
