Summary
It's the summer of 1992, and Will Byers has come home. And Mike cannot stop staring.
Mike is on the NYU waitlist. Will just finished his first year of art school in New York. They have one summer in Hawkins before everything changes, and Mike is running out of room to hide.
Fire in My Heart follows Mike and Will from the thick Indiana heat of June through their first months sharing a studio apartment in Brooklyn. Wrestling matches on the basement floor. Long drives that end with the car idling in the dark. A gay bar in Indianapolis where everything finally breaks open. And then New York: two people who have known each other their whole lives, finally figuring out what it means to actually be together.
Grief lives in the walls of this story. The trauma didn't stop when the gates closed. And Mike Wheeler has been in love with his best friend for longer than he's willing to admit, even to himself.

Those protective instincts kick in and Mike can’t help himself as a crazy, irrational idea takes root in his mind.
An idea that has absolutely nothing to do with seeing Will practically naked in a speedo two nights a week for an entire year. Nope. Definitely not.
“What if I joined the team with you?” Mike blurts, reddening.

Will and Mike join the Hawkins High swim team in their senior year, spend waaaay too much time together in teeny tiny speedos and one thing leads to another at the pool…
Setting: Post Vecna-defeat (except El lives because she deserves a better ending, just like our boys do), their final year of high school but I’m aging them up to 18 because the content is explicit. (I head canon that the total devastation of Hawkins resulted in their normal high school trajectory getting delayed because that makes more sense than what the Duffers did.)

Summary
The door to his bedroom suddenly felt miles away. Mike walked along a fence line, until there was no path. Then just kept going, until he was in the desert. No lights, except the party at a distance. The stars were glowing in a way that made everything feel so fucking small. Mike was looking at the ground so he didn’t notice.
He sat on a rock that was the start of a hillside, maybe an entire mountain, it was too dark to tell.
'What the fuck.' He thought to himself.
He really had no idea how this would go, but this? Barely even 2 sentences exchanged? Fuck, he would have rather Will scream at him in front of everyone. Tell him how fucked up it was that Mike never reached out. After Will came out. After he told Will he was still his best friend. After his sister died.
‘Tell me, tell me Will that you’re mad at me. Tell me that’s why you never called again, so I have something concrete to blame it on.’
But the nothingness? Like they just barely knew each other. That was so much worse.

Palm Springs Movie (2020) inspired, Mike and Will meet after 3 years of not speaking, at Jonathan and Nancy's wedding.
