His sword whistles past Goro’s ear, nicking at the delicate skin. Goro grits his teeth, body tense with anticipation. The rain makes it hard to predict where Kurusu’s black sword will strike next.
“Hifumi passed on your greetings,” Akira Kurusu says, fury simmering beneath his conversational tone. “And I’m polite enough to give you my own in person. So greetings, General Goro Akechi. I am the man who will kill you.” Kurusu bares his teeth in a poor imitation of a smile, anger written all over his face, and strikes again.
Or: Goro Akechi and Akira Kurusu are generals on opposing sides of war.

Summary
"Our plan was to use Sae's palace," Akira says. "We'd pull you into the Metaverse and let you kill her cognition of me in the interrogation room."
Was. It's useless now that Akechi knows, but Akira smiles as he speaks. He's cornered himself, mate in one, but it won't be the first time he's died. At worst he'll restart his probation again, back in April.
At best, they'll move to step two of his real plan, tearing apart Shido's conspiracy one crooked heart at a time until Akechi is as free as his past allows and resoundingly not dead. It'd be easy to resent the world for demanding Akira save it, but at least it's had the decency to let him save his friends along the way. All of them, even the one who only makes the job harder.

Summary
When Goro Akechi turns nineteen, the world as he knows it begins to shift.
Train rides and birthday parties alike are plagued by visions of the city he calls home crumbling under a blood-red sky. A strange girl in a blue dress warns him that time is running out, and that he must remember before it's too late. He dreams of a stranger with messy hair and gray eyes who knows him better than anyone ever has, and even though he doesn't know his name, Goro feels like he knows him, too.
Maybe it would be more accurate to say that when Goro Akechi turns nineteen, the world as he knows it falls apart.
