My no-kidding master's thesis, the tl;dr version of which can be summarized as "Twilight sucks, but not because teenage girls love it or because it contains sparkling vampires". Actual abstract: "Despite being generally received as wholesome entertainment, Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series implicitly supports rape culture by subtly reinforcing dangerous ideas about romance and relationships. In order to demonstrate the pervasive nature of these attitudes at work in the Twilight series, this paper first describes the concept itself and the crucial features of the beliefs that support it. Dracula—and, more importantly, the prevailing cultural perceptions about Stoker’s novel—functions as an important intertext for Twilight thanks to its status as one of the earliest popular vampire novels, and I use it to show how these attitudes can normalize certain assumptions about sexuality in a context generally assumed to involve a clear sexual interpretation. My examination of the books in Meyer’s modern vampire narrative takes this idea further, arguing that the same attitudes applied to Dracula provide an even more subtle representation of the mindsets that comprise and perpetuate rape culture."

Mal, Jay, Evie and Carlos are learning that Auradon isn't as perfect as it seems, but it's still better than the Isle. At least in Auradon, they have each other (except they don't), they can love openly (except they can't) and they will never see their parents again (except they will).
With help from the sworn enemies of their parents, Mal, Jay, Evie and Carlos are going to use everything at their disposal to survive and stick together, even if brings Auradon to the ground.

It was a Friday when it rained, Mal was on a rush to get to her Tourney game and Evie was busy rushing to get her things moved from Charmington to Auradon. Well, that kinda failed when Evie's car broke down and Mal decided to help her. Since then, both of them felt this stupid void until they met each other again.

Instead of leaving the children of the Villains to rot on the Island, King Adam decides to do a sweep, taking them to live in Auradon instead. Jay and Evie are caught up and raised as good, productive citizens. Carlos and Mal? Let's just say they were overlooked. 16 years later he tries to rectify that mistake by catching and bringing them over, which doesn't go well. They're anxious, aggressive, and in no mood to play nice. In a last ditch effort, he tries assigning them partners to help them get used to the idea of being good. Or in Carlos' case, get him out from under the bed. As far as Mal is concerned? Oh, my, how Auradon will burn.
