Summary
“And who are you with?”
“The Petrova Taskforce. I believe you know why we exist.”
“I do know what the Petrova line is,” I agree. “If you’re coming to a middle school science teacher about it, I must be your Hail Mary.”
Stratt’s face splinters into a small, sharp smile. “Yes. I believe you are.”

In loco parentis (Latin): "in the place of a parent." A legal term denoting the responsibility of an institution or individual for a child in the absence of the child's parent or guardian. In education, this responsibility is shared between the school and the teacher.
Some teachers take it to heart more than others.

Summary
The Ship of Theseus, is a paradox/common thought experiment about whether an object is the same object after having all of its original components replaced with others over time.
(Erid loves Ryland Grace, who is so short-lived compared to them. Erid fixes that.)

Somewhere between Adrian and Erid, Rocky invents the xenosuit to help Grace. It turns out they both needed it.
"The thing about sharing a spaceship with a guy in a hamster ball is you end up doing the grunt work. So here we are, en route to an alien planet, and I am once again hanging off the side of the dang ship. At least this time I’m securely fastened and not watching us sink toward our doom."

Summary
After the Taumoeba leak, after I decided to die after all and turned my ship around to save Rocky, after Rocky's frantic calculations about food supplies, Taumoeba multiplication rates, and human caloric intake needs, after we realized that with some rationing and luck I would make it, but that we were headed toward the unknown territory of trying to rapid-prototype me a life support system and synthetic food supply on an inhospitable planet: after all of that, after everything, I shouldn't have been surprised that it only took a few months on board the Hail Mary for things to get weird.

Summary
Rocky’s ventral seam starts to split at my absentminded touches, and I practically gnaw straight through my lip as shiny fluid drips down his carapace. The xenonite suit forces the juices to smear across him, reminiscent of soaked panties, and my hips grind down involuntarily.
He’s basically the equivalent of legs spread, flat on his back for me right now, right?
