To say it had been a shock to see Phoenix across the courtroom from him that first time would be an understatement. Phoenix was an old, warm memory gone cold with time and von Karma’s influence. But facing that nervous smile, that brightly determined gaze, had cleared some of the fog. It had forced him to remember that sunlight existed. To realize it lived in too-kind eyes.
The gaze Phoenix fixes him with now is as dark and unsettling as a day that begins without dawn.
While Miles has been making his slow way to spring, Phoenix has fallen into winter.

It’s something Eddie would have said teasingly when they were teens. Steve would have smacked him on the shoulder, affectionately calling him an asshole before being pulled into an apologetic kiss. But they are not teenagers anymore and Eddie’s voice lacks any of the warmth that used to be reserved for Steve. Now, it’s just loaded with resentment, which, yeah, is a fair reaction.
“I…eh…work here now,” Steve says lamely and points at his office door. “Guidance counselor.”

Heavy like a burden, like a cursed prophet, harbinger of death. Others cry tears of joy when they get their words, Eddie had cried tears of anxiety. The dark letters on his wrist read, “Dustin died.”
On the other side of town and yet worlds apart from Eddie, Steve loathes the words on his wrist just as much. Not because he doesn’t want a soulmate. No, he longs for them every day. And every day is a painful reminder that he hasn’t found them yet when someone randomly calls out his words. The letters on his wrist simply say, “Hey Steve.”

“My lord,” Steve says and shifts onto his knees in an attempt to bow. To be humble. To show his respect. To admit to his own mortal inferiority. He grits his teeth through it.
“Shit, my lord, you can cut the formalities, darling,” the god chuckles. “Though I do like seeing you on your knees.”
“What should I call you then?” Steve asks. “Your divine presence? Celestial master? Pompous ass?”
The god just laughs and glances over his shoulder at his own ass.
“Not much there to be considered pompous, I’m afraid,” he says before he turns back to Steve, no trace of the anger that Steve is choking on found in his face. “I like celestial master, has some dramatic flair to it. But Eddie will do just fine.”
“God of wine making and pleasure,” Steve says automatically.
“Also of orchards and fruit, fertility, ritual madness, religious ecstasy and theater, darling,” Eddie does a little bow himself. “At your service.”or: after helping Tommy slay the minotaur, Steve gets left behind on a small island to die. That's where he meets Eddie, god of wine and pleasure. Steve doesn't like gods, but this one is different. This one might help him heal from all his trauma, guilt, and broken heart.

Fed up with it all, he decides to get back out there and what better way to that then with a challenge? If he goes on one date a month he is bound to find the one eventually, right? And if his dates all end horribly, at least he can count on his best friend and roommate Eddie to be there for him and console him over pizza and beer.

Despair is not a new feeling: he is intimately familiar with it, its shape, the song it sings to him in the dark. He knows that temptation is half of the punishment, understands that the brief desperate hope of freedom, the fleeting sight of Charles’ face, the moment, time after time after time, before Charles’ rejection, where his love hangs in the air between them and somewhere there is a future where Charles doesn’t turn away— he knows that this is all part of the torment. He’s read his Classics. He knows all about damnation.
Or, Hell got a bit more creative with its torture this time.

Steve leans against the side of the boathouse and lets Eddie fumble with the cheap Bic lighter for a minute before he clears his throat and says, “You want a light?”
It's hard to read his tone. There's a bitter, suspicious, self-defensive part of Eddie that wants to lash out, but instead he grips the lighter until the plastic creaks and says, “Sure. If you have one.”
“Yeah.” Steve digs in his pocket and comes up with a nice Zippo. He doesn't hand it to Eddie; instead, he flicks the flame on and holds it out for him to lean down, and there's an intimacy to it that Eddie wasn't quite expecting. Like one of those old Leyendecker paintings. He imagines this tableau sketched out in clean art deco lines: the prom king and the freak. A study in contrasts.

“Because of biology,” Steve supplies, trying to steer this thing back on track.
“Because of Vulcan biology,” Eddie sighs, and seems to give in.
“Okay,” Steve says slowly, “But what–”
“Because of Vulcan sexual biology,” Eddie grits out, and puts his face back in his hands.
So he misses how Steve goes bright red, thankfully. Given how the tips of Eddie’s ears are a vibrant green, he’s in a similar situation.
“Oh, well,” Steve clears his throat. “No shame in that, Ensign,” god, he’s fallen back on rank now, if Eddie wasn’t so clearly a mess he would absolutely make sure that Steve never lived it down. He attempts a laugh, his mouth dry. “The birds and the bees do it, after all.”
“Fuck youuuu,” Eddie groans, parting his fingers to stare balefully at Steve. “The birds and bees aren’t Vulcans, Steve.”

But when he eventually snaps and somehow pushes them into an almost enemies-with-benefits relationship, it isn't long before his feelings catch up with him.

He shouldn’t care about the fact that he’s gotten used to Eddie spending a full hour getting ready, primping and priming, blasting heavy metal and simultaneously talking Steve’s ear off as he meticulously applies eyeliner and fluffs out his hair just right before he heads out with a wave on yet another of his seemingly endless dates. They used to spend Friday and Saturday nights mostly together–hanging out, watching movies, smoking joints–and it’s not even that that bugs him the most, losing a friend like that.
It’s that it was his idea in the first place.

Five times Eddie goes on dates with other people, and the one time where he finally goes with Steve.

Steve Harrington didn't really need much to be happy. He was finally signing divorce papers, ready to be free of his ex-wife. He liked his job at the coffee shop, especially because he got to do it beside his best friend in the whole world. And it didn't hurt that Steve's favorite customer, a guy with dark messy curls and a smile to die for, kept coming back to order his usual.
The only weird thing was that Eddie didn't seem to be drinking his coffee because his cup was always full at the end of the night. So Steve made his mission to find a drink Eddie would like, he just didn't imagine it would be something a little... Different.
OR; Barista Steve knows he shouldn't be pining over his handsome customer. But who could blame him? And if said customer, one Eddie Munson, ended up being a vampire? Maybe Steve wouldn't mind it that much.

Summary
Eddie’s still got a bit of a limp, and despite the remaining bandages under his Metallica tee shirt, it doesn’t stop him. He walks into family video like the limp is part of the swagger, shooting finger guns and waving at an imaginary crowd, “thank you! Thank you! Wasn’t expecting such an amazing turn out,” he stops briefly, pretending someone's offering him a microphone, “well, yes, obviously tales of my demise have been greatly exaggerated,” and he hands the microphone back, more finger guns, one of those manic smiles where he sticks his tongue out as far as it’ll go, shooting devil horns above his head. “The hero returns!” Eddie announces to the empty Family Video as he finally gets to where Steve is resting his hip against the counter, trying not to smile at Eddie’s antics. He knows he's being dumb, but Eddie can’t resist hamming it up, just to watch Steve trying not to smile.
Eddie knows Steve’s near breaking into laughter when he rolls his eyes instead.
