So here’s the thing. Looking at houses together had just started as something to do to fill time during all the hurry up and wait. It was meant to just be a joke, maybe stretching as far as fantasizing with a ‘imagine if we..’ thrown in every once in a while. It was supposed to stay safely on Charles’ laptop settled between them on the mattress of the slightly too small bed in Carlos’ apartment.
It was never supposed to end with a realtor pressing a key into Carlos’ hand with a ‘Congratulations’ in a heavy Italian accent.

“Are you happy?” Charles asked. Carlos smiled and stuck his fork back into his bowl. He leaned forward, reaching across the small gap between their chairs, and grabbed Charles’ hands. He lifted them to his mouth and kissed his knuckles in turn before pressing them to his cheeks and huffing a breath of warm air into them.
“I’m more than happy,” he responded after lowering their hands. “You’re here, we’re here. I’m happy.”
