Summary
A few days after Midoriya rescues Eri, Aizawa sits his class down and gives them a lecture on villains and kidnapping and captivity. He describes in great detail the type of mental trauma this can have on a person. They may be forced to commit acts against their own will for the survival of themselves or others. They may even come to love their captors, debt grown out of years of oppression.
Mashirao is the model student during this time, nods along to his words, winces at all the right moments, and even sends some sympathetic glances towards Midoriya when the boy shifts awkwardly. After all, there is nothing wrong here. He is merely learning, observing, and reminds Himself to write it down, since He will have to tell Boss about it later in the report.
(That night, He walks into His room, drops Himself into a space between His bed and the wall, and places His hands against His neck, exactly where His collar usually sits. The actions feel familiar, calming, and terrifying, all at once. Aizawa calls that conditioning and Stockholm and abuse.

Every time he found a bit of happiness it never lasted, whether by his own hands or forces he couldn't control, whatever semblance of a life he had was violently ripped away. So when he finally found a place to call home and people to love he was wary, knowing that one day this fleeting family would be torn away from him as well. He just wished it happened differently, wished it didn't have to happen in a way so painful and cruel that it left his already fragile box of happiness teetering on the edge of a never-ending abyss.
