“I don’t think this is how most new recruits are treated.” Koby thinks as he sits across from Garp “The Fist,” a living legend in the Marines, with a Go board in between them.
...
After a particular move played by the boy, a move that the man has seen before, played by another, much younger boy. It leads him to make the comment, “your, playing, it reminds me of someone.”“Sir?” Koby says, confused at who he of all people could remind Monkey D. Garp of anyone.
“Yes, my grandson.” Garp says, taking a sip of his drink while making his next move.
“You have a grandson?” That surprises Koby, not thinking Garp would be the type to even have a family, after all, no one ever talked about him having a wife or a child.
“I have three actually. Three incredibly unique grandsons,” Garp looks down into his glass, swirling it and watching the liquid moves.
...Or through a game of Go, Koby learns of Garp's grandchildren and Garp is able to speak of his regrets and love and pride for his grandchildren. But more importantly, Koby sees the man beneath the legend.
