There had been a summer scorch that year, and what little the Empire didn’t take back from their fields, they had to keep for themselves, barely enough to survive the winter on. His father, though quite skilled at farming, was not able to bend the few leftover metal screws he had left into a ring fit for a bride. In a moment of love, he folded up a letter from the Crown, twisting and turning, folding and creasing until it turned into an elegant paper ring. Caleb’s mother wore it in her locket every day.
