Summary
It is irrational. It's childish. But the image of his mother, tears in her eyes and a warm touch on his skin, makes him want to hold on to this moment.
So he simply nods. And blows out the small candle.
"You have to be strong, habibi" whispers his mother, sliding a hand down his back in a gesture he doesn't know how to receive.
Damian tries not to tense up. He fails.
"Shujaa" she says one last time, laying him back on his bed with unfamiliar tenderness. And when she disappears into the darkness, Damian feels something break inside him.
The next morning, and in the days that follow, his mother is nowhere to be found. No matter how much he waits, no matter how many mistakes he makes on purpose, she never comes back for him.
Or; Instead of Talia take Damien to Bruce, she disappears from the boy's life. Years later, the family he didn't know he had breaks into the league of assassins.
And Damien hates them.

Summary
Robin wasn’t ever supposed to be a thing. Batman had never needed a sidekick, never had plans for a successor. He honestly didn't even want kids. Bruce Wayne had enough to deal with without having to worry about a literal child running around.
Of course, that was when the first Robin had arrived.

This was not the plan.
Originally, he ran away to find his parents, but now that they were found, stuck in a state of unrest and uncontrollable laughter, he had nothing to find. No family to look for, no family to love.
They hardly even knew him, their own son, just looked at him with the same sad look and the same strained smile. Duke bets they’ve probably lost themselves in that sad asylum in their mind that they’ve drowned in. They’ll never remember Elaine and Doug Thomas, the woman who welcomed everyone, the man who cracked jokes hoping to make someone’s bad day a tiny bit better. The parents who loved their daughter, and loved her when he became a son.
They’re nothing now, just empty corpses who still breathe.
The doctors said they were healing. The doctors were also fucking liars because his promised top surgery kept getting delayed.
Or-
Duke didn’t tell the Batfam he was trans, thinking it was unimportant. So when Duke starts acting off and more angry? They find out and he spirals.

“Batman, Bruce,” Duke says, starting to get a little desperate, “I need Batman.”
Bruce’s mouth quirks into a frown, “I’m sorry, I don’t know who that is.” Then he adds; “Is he in the Justice League? You’ll have to forgive me, I haven’t been keeping up with them like I used to. I used to finance them, I’m sure if I pulled a few strings…”
“Justice League,” Duke mumbles. To Bruce, he asks, “Is there no hero based in Gotham?”
Bruce gives him that oddly delayed stare and response again, and then barks out a laugh. “God, no. Can you imagine someone capable of managing Gotham?”
Or; Duke gets quite literally thrown into a reality where he seemingly doesn’t exist, and neither does Batman.
