Summary

“Got any big plans for Wednesday?”
“No, what’s Wednesday?” Ellie asks, brow furrowed.
“Valentine’s Day.” He chews slowly. “I only ask because I’m not gonna be around to cook that night. Me and Tess might go out for drinks after work.”
She swats at his arm across the table. “Way to go, old man!”
He rolls his eyes. “Nothin’s final yet. I thought you might be meetin’ up with Jesse or something.”
She snorts around a huge mouthful of rice, scattering some back onto her plate. “Why the hell would I go out with Jesse?”
Joel shrugs, eyeing the spit rice on her plate with mild disgust. “Sure do talk about him a lot is all.”
“He’s my manager, we interact a lot. But it’s not like that.” If anyone’s going out with him, it’s probably Dina. She spends enough time hanging around at his desk anyway.
“We’ll see, kiddo. I’ve got a pretty keen eye for these sort of things.”
“Not so keen with this one,” Ellie replies with a chuckle.

“So another random holiday,” Ellie muses, arms wrapped around Tommy’s lean waist as they ride toward a nearby town. “What’s the point of this one?”
“Fuck if I know. Just one of them greeting card company holidays, I think. You’re supposed to bring your girlfriend flowers or candy or somethin’.”
Ellie glances at the desolate, snow covered landscape surrounding them, and doubts they’ll have much luck finding either of those things around here. “Sounds dumb.”
“Yeah, it is. But it’s important to a lot of the folks back home. Reminds them of better times, I reckon.”
It makes sense, kind of, but Ellie still thinks it’s weird.“So what’d you get Maria last year?” she asks.
“I didn’t. That’s the problem.”
Ellie snorts. “Have you just like never had a girlfriend before her, or what?”
“Had plenty of ‘em, just didn’t go through the trouble of shopping for ‘em. Didn’t keep ‘em around long enough for them to expect it.”
“So that’s why it took you like fifty years to find a wife. Got it.”
