The sound of the gunshot was so loud Gavin couldn't hear anything else. He couldn't hear the sound of the men yelling at each other to leave, he couldn't hear the sound of the tires screeching as they drove away, he couldn't hear the sound of his body hitting the pavement. But he could hear Nines. He could hear the panic in his voice as he knelt down next to him and put his head in his lap.
"Hey tin-can." Gavin mustered weakly, smiling up at the android. He began to cough heavily, spitting up some blood in the process.
Nines was already doing a scan, but even without that they both knew it wasn't good.
Injury heavily sustained to upper left quadrant and thoracic cavity, organ damage present. Chance of survival: 40%. Seek treatmetnt immediately.
Nines began to panic. He couldn't let Gavin die, he couldn't leave his partner alone waiting for the slim possibility of help arriving on time. All of Nines' processors were screaming at him to finish the mission, to apprehend the men they came here for but he just couldn't do it. He wasn't leaving here without Gavin. He looked down at the man, tears welling in his eyes.
"Looks like I do need you looking out for me after all, huh?"

“There are a multitude of universes and in all of them there is one constant, Captain Rogers. Do you know what that might be?” She asks as she walks around him. It's clear she isn't expecting an answer.
He follows her movements with his eyes, the only part of him that he has control over.
“The one constant across all universes and all time is one Steve Rogers for every James Barnes. Always.”
She comes around to face him again, but directs his attention to the side where images have started to appear, ghostlike and faded, but unmistakable. A Steve for every Bucky and a Bucky for every Steve.
“Do you see, Captain Rogers?" She asks. "The multiverse is not to be trifled with.”
“A Steve for every Bucky,” he says, “but it’s not me. It’s not me, not anymore. Bucky deserves someone who can love him right and that he can love in return. That’s what I’m trying to do.”
He’s crying, he can feel the tears stream down his face. He cries for what he’s lost and for what he will lose when he returns to his own time. “I’m not the one that can love him best, not like he deserves.”
But he knows who can.

Obi-Wan Kenobi would consider himself to have a good life - he’s a Jedi, a high school teacher, and the owner of approximately eighty various Sudoku puzzle books, so a better life is hard to imagine. More than that, he would consider himself to be a good person. But even a good person has their limits, and he’s slowly being pushed towards his by his across-the-hall neighbor.
