Caligari can feel this one's heartbeat, along with its ribcage swelling and sinking with each breath. The new ones are like that, sometimes. Their bodies, so freshly dead, haven't yet realized that pumping blood is no longer necessary. All the gullyworks that control fear and anxiety are still intact, so the heart goes on pattering against its ribcage like a jackrabbit, unaware that its just forcing blood out of its body faster.

Summary
"Sit," she orders lightly, and then turns to continue rifling through the clothes she picked out for him.
As ordered, and as he's done for many of his previous owners, Cesare gets onto his knees. He sits with his legs folded underneath him on the carpeted floor, waiting patiently for Penny to turn back to him in the cramped space. She does, and when she sees him, her lips part slightly, blinking down at him softly as their eyes make contact.
After betraying his puppet masters and being kicked to the curb by Upper Management, Cesare is left with nowhere to go, no prospects and worst of all, no purpose- a puppet with cut strings.
Help comes from an unlikely source in the form of one of his former foodtruck rivals- Penny, single mother of one and part-time hamburger clown. She promises to help him reintegrate into modern human life, teaching him some much needed manners and making him feel useful again in the process- by training him in the duties of a housewife, of course!
Cesare realizes he may have left one master just to be claimed by another, a discarded toy passed from owner to owner, but living with Penny makes him love being nothing but a pretty doll.

"If there were two cats who were known to be enemies," Cesare barrels on, head craned to be seen by the trio around the doorframe and the headrest of the driver's seat, "And one cat slowly blinked at the other one, that would probably catch the second cat completely off guard, right? Throw him totally, irrevocably off his game? Make him think they were in some sort of stalemate, maybe... maybe even a truce of some kind. He wouldn't even think to fight back- I mean, it's hard wired into his brain, for God's sake, he couldn't help it. A sitting duck. No, no- a goose that begs to have a horn stuck down its elegant throat to make the most succulent of foie gras. He'd never even see it coming!"
"I feel like this is referring to something really specific, but I can't figure out what," Frances says dryly.

Munkustrap cries like a martyr on the day Steve is banished, spilling messily into the weeks and then months afterwards, though in his heart he knows he is both the sacrificial lamb and the faceless uncaring diety it is being offered up to. If anyone notices that his reaction is more similar to one following the death of a pair mate than a mere acquaintance, no one says anything. No one had known; not even himself.
The understudies wipe the tears from his eyes as he sits, unmoving, watching numbly from dark ringed eyes as the performers traipse out their intricate dance once more on stage.
"It had to be done," The understudies titter quietly around him, wiping his face and nose and brushing any forming matts from his hair, "It was the will of the fates."
"Our planet's dance with the cosmos will go on, and we will continue to prosper."
